A known amount of distilled water was added to each sampler in the period when no rain was observed. At the end of each month, the sample solution was transferred into flexible polyethylene bottles and sent to the Meteorological Research Institute at Tsukuba Science City for analyses of the chemical components. [Pg.258]

To relate the long-scale variations in the Black Sea to the global climatic meteorological cycles, we used NAO, SOI, and NIN03 climatic indices, obtained from the International Research Institute of Climate Prediction (Columbia University, USA). NAO is defined as the monthly averaged difference between the standardized measurements of the sea level atmospheric pressure in Azores and Iceland. SOI is the difference between the standardized measurements of the sea level atmospheric pressure in Tahiti and Darwin, Australia. NIN03 index is determined as the SST anomalies over the eastern tropical Pacific (5°S-5°N 150°W-90°W). [Pg.337]

In the mid-1940s, John von Neumaim (1903-1957) of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton embarked upon research on the problem of numerical weather prediction as the most complex physical problem yet conceived and whose solution would require the fastest computing devices for many years to come. At the Institute, a meteorological research group was set up under Jule Gregory Chamey (1917-1981) to attack the problem of numerical weather prediction through a step-by-step... [Pg.366]

In the late 1970s, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) completed the Sulfate Regional Experiment (SURE), which was designed to create a regional aerometric data base of information on sulfur oxides and related air pollutants in the northeastern states (Mueller and Hidy, 1983). The SURE showed a maximum in regional sulfate concentrations within 100-300 km of major SO2 source areas and that the temporal variability in sulfate concentrations was most strongly influenced by meteorology. [Pg.16]

As noted by Wolman ( 3), educational institutions are continually asked to prepare those who will search for solutions of societal problems. Problems in the real world do not separate nicely into "disciplines". We do not see the "botany problem", or the "meteorology problem", or the "chemical engineering problem", as such. Rather, we see a minor by-product from a facility designed by a chemical engineer. Released, it is transported by meteorological processes, and becomes of concern because a botanist foresees ecological damage as a consequence of its downwind presence. Thus while disciplines and departments in universities are an administrative convenience and provide a perhaps needed foundation for specialized research and education, educational institutions also must address problems which do not fit nicely into present disciplinary units. [Pg.199]

In 1978, the emission of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) from an aluminum plant In the vicinity of Sundsvall, Sweden, was estimated to be about four times the total amount emitted from all the motor vehicles In that country. As might be expected, the result of this estimate caused considerable concern, and a survey of the air quality In the Sundsvall area was made In 1980-81. The program monitored concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and fluoride In ambient air, with samples being collected once each week. Concentrations of fluoride and meteorological data were measured by the aluminum company laboratory, while PAH concentrations were determined by the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU). [Pg.130]
