Metallized polyester film

The high strength and dimensional stability of the polyester film have also led to its use for x-ray and photographic film and to a number of graphic art and drafting applications. The film is also used in food packaging, including boil-in-bag food pouches. Metallized polyester films have many uses as a decorative material.

Applications where acrylics see use include the heat sealing of cellophane to metal foil and metallized polyester film or polypropylene film. These films are used primarily in the food packaging area. Other applications are in the overlay area, where clear or photoembossed vinyl films are bonded to wood substrates to produce a simulated expensive wood grain finish. 

Lightly metallized polyester films are placed over windows to help reduce the sunlight passing through the window. Most of these solar radiation control films are coated with a PSA for attachment. 

Foil balloons are derived from the effort of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Command with the concept and technology to metalizate plastic sheeting. While the balloons are often referred to as Mylar or silver Mylars, they are not made from Mylar, a trade name for certain polyester film. They should be simply referred to as foil balloons. They are made from nylon film coated on one side with PE and metallized on the other. The nylon film gives the balloon some strength and the PE gives it some flexibility and helps retard the release of the held gas. 

Using a similar solution, films of either Ag or AgO were deposited on both glass and polyester film [41]. Addition of triethanolamine to a Ag solution caused initial precipitation (silver oxide or hydroxide), which redissolved in excess triethanolamine. Deposition from a solution where some precipitate remained resulted in AgO (possibly with some Ag20), while a solution where this precipitate was completely redissolved gave metallic Ag. The reducing action of the free triethanolamine present in the latter case may be the cause of the formation of metallic Ag. 

Titanates have been instrumental in the bonding of fluorinated resins to packaging films, poly(hydantoin)—polyester to polyester wire enamel, polysulfide sealant to polyurethane (a phosphated titanate is recommended), polyethylene to cellophane using a titanated polyethylenimine, and silicone mbber sealant to metal or plastic support using polysilane (Si—H) plus polysiloxane (Si—OR) and titanate as the adhesive ingredients (450—454). Polyester film coated first with a titanium alkoxide, then with a poly(vinyl alcohol)—polyethylenimine blend, becomes impermeable to gases (455).

The carrier may be glassine, cellulose film, and polyester film. The choice of carrier relates to speed and transfer temperature. Polyester (i.e. Melinex) is the most common base. It is suitable for flat, cylindrical or radiused surfaces. The process is used for online printing. Metallic foil consists of a carrier, release coating, lacquer metallised layer and a hot melt type adhesive specially formulated for the substrate.

Preparation of films from the polyester and their metal complexes Films of 9a with poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA, 100,000 Da) were prepared by dissolving 9a in an aqueous 10% PVA solution and casting the solution onto a glass plate. Metal complex films of the polyester were prepared by adding 0.09 g of KOH and 0.18 g of Ni(CH3COO)2 or 0.09 g of C0CI2 to the aqueous solution of 0.5 g of 9a and PVA and casting the solution.
