Metallic pigments molding

Both injection blow molding and pinch tube processes are especially suitable for metallic pigments, because the expansion of the plastic during the blowing process causes further orientation of the metallic pigment parallel to the surface. 

The SCORIM Process. It is possible to attach the SCORIM unit to the injection molder to manipulate the filling process of the mold so that in the area of the weld lines the resin is mixed [16]. This will improve the structural strength substantially and at the same time the unwanted orientation of metallic pigments is prevented. This process typically requires a 10-15°C higher temperature of the resin and the mold. The process is based on a prolonged flow ability of the polymer. 

By offering silver and colored metallic pigments, which avoid flow lines of injection molded plastic parts due to their large particle size, totally new possibilities have been opened for achieving brilliant, metallic like appearance and new, unique color effects of plastic products. 

In particular, molded products covered with metallized films can be highly reflective and lack the flow- and weld-line inconsistencies in metal pigment distribution that can be found in internally pigmented moldings. The films are usually more durable than paint, with lower system costs and a lower environmental footprint as well. However, part compatibility depends on the process and pressures required to form the part and apply the film [6-3].

In the automotive market, appearance is often a significant functional and aesthetic requirement influencing polymer selection. For example, with large exterior body parts, such as fascia and body panels, a surface finish that matches the adjacent sheet metal is an absolute requirement dictated by consumer expectations. This consumer preference for Class A exterior surface quality has several times thwarted attempts to eliminate current painting processes, which tend to be costly and environmentally unfriendly. P.Y.212 is not recommended for exterior use, but provides an excellent value for interior applications such as packaging and household durables of all types. Pigment Yellow 212 is tinctorially quite strong as metallized azos go and exhibits very good dimensional stability, making it very useful in molded items such as blow molded containers.
