Exterior Body Parts

Polyurethane, thermoplastic TPU has excellent properties except for heat resistance (usually only up to 250°F 121°C). It is used in alloys with ABS or PVC for property enhancement. Typical uses are in automobile fascias and exterior body parts, tubing, cord, shoe soles, ski boots and other oil and wear resistant products. 

The rigid urethane foam concept with integral skins has also found considerable interest in the automotive industry for exterior body parts, such as engine or trunk compartment lids, fenders and even full roofs. These parts can be reinforced with metal inserts where necessary or hinges and fasteners can be molded in for ready mounting.

Polyurethanes find application in many areas. They can be used as impact modifiers for other plastics. Other applications include rollers or wheels, exterior body parts, drive belts, and hydraulic seals. They are also used in tubing and hose in both unreinforced and reinforced forms because of their low-temperature properties and toughness. In other important automotive applications, increased requirements in terms of surface appearance, low-temperature toughness, flowability and warpage properties have been met by PBT blends. Automotive exterior parts such as door handles, mirror housings, window delta molding, and sunroof frames must have an excellent surface finish, especially if they are unpainted. Pure polycarbonate resin is rarely used for exterior body parts. However, PC/ABS is used for manufacture of applications such as mirror housings, light housings and wheel trim. PC/PBT is found almost entirely in exterior applications, the most notable applications being bumper fascias and also body panels. The body panels of the Smart Car for example, are made from PC/PBT blends. PC/PBT blends account for only 5% of the global bumper fascia market. 

In the automotive market, appearance is often a significant functional and aesthetic requirement influencing polymer selection. For example, with large exterior body parts, such as fascia and body panels, a surface finish that matches the adjacent sheet metal is an absolute requirement dictated by consumer expectations. This consumer preference for Class A exterior surface quality has several times thwarted attempts to eliminate current painting processes, which tend to be costly and environmentally unfriendly.
