Stable metallic glass compositions

Very little is known about the influence of grain growth, or crystallization if the membrane is composed of an amorphous alloy, on membrane durability. The as-fabricated permselective metal membrane will be polycrystalline or amorphous, depending on the alloy composition and fabrication method. Amorphous, or metallic glass, structures are far less common than are polycrystalline structures. Both amorphous and polycrystalline structures are quasi-stable, meaning that structures are kinetically stabilized and slow to rearrange to the thermodynamically favored structure. In both cases, this would be a single crystal of the metal. [Pg.377]

Note that in LRC, the stable Frenkel pairs may be formed (e.g., under irradiation). The energy spectrum of Frenkel pair formation is somewhat spread due to the spread in energies of vacancies and interstitials formation. The width of this spectrum as well as variations in energy of vacancies and interstitials formation may amount to some eV, and the typical values of the threshold energy of Frenkel pair formation in metallic glasses as well as in crystals may amount to about 25-30 eV. The interconnect material s function is to connect the single cells to provide higher output. They are in contact with both the anode and the cathode. Therefore, they must be stable with both electrode materials and in oxidizing and reducing environments. To reduce the ohmic losses and increase efficiency, the interconnect material must also maintain a low electrical resistance. Basically, two materials are used as interconnect materials metallic and ceramic materials, in which chromium are present, such as CoCr204, YCrOj, and LaCrOj. For metal, dielectric and semiconductor films fabrication, optical and silica glass are popular substrate materials because of their availability, cost-effectiveness, and inert character, i.e., they are stable in the required temperature range for common photonic, optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications, they do not chemically react with the prepared films, and the hard plane surface makes the formation of optically smooth thin films fairly easy. Generally, it is preferable to form films by a simple, low-temperature, inexpensive and environment friendly method. Sol-gel technique and thermal evaporation is found suitable for the preparation of film parts of efficient solar cells [1], emitters, transformers [2], detectors and modulators of light [3], as well as optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters [4]. Ideally one material should be hard, e.g. glass, so that it bites into a resilient (soft) material such as composition cork.
