Special metals

Siace dimer acids, monomer acids, and trimer acids are unsaturated, they are susceptible to oxidative and thermal attack, and under certain conditions they are slightly corrosive to metals. Special precautions are necessary, therefore, to prevent product color development and equipment deterioration. Type 304 stainless steel is recommended for storage tanks for dimer acids. Eor heating coils and for agitators 316 stainless steel is preferred (heating coils with about 4s m (50 ft ) of heat transfer surface ia the form of a 5.1 cm schedule-10 U-bend scroU are recommended for a 37. 9-m (10,000-gal) tank. Dimer acid storage tanks should have an iaert gas blanket. [Pg.115]

Columbium (also known as niobium) and tantalum metals are produced from purified salts, which are prepared from ore concentrates and slags resulting from foreign tin production. The concentrates and slags are leached with hydrofluoric acid to dissolve the metal salts. Solvent extraction or ion exchange is used to purify the columbium and tantalum. The salts of these metals are then reduced by means of one of several techniques, including aluminothermic reduction, sodium reduction, carbon reduction, and electrolysis.19-21 Owing to the reactivity of these metals, special techniques are used to purify and work the metal produced. [Pg.95]

The role of OSC materials in NO conversion is more complex. Most metals, specially Rh, are able to decompose NO, but this reaction is rapidly inhibited by O species resulting from this decomposition [60]. On Rh, for instance, Rh-0 species are replaced by Rh-NO+ ones in which NO is no longer dissociated [61]. O species may react with adsorbed species of the reducer (CO, HC) to form C02. The first role of the OSC materials could be to liberate metal sites by accepting O species. Indirect effects can also occur, with the Ce3+/Ce4+ redox system being able to regulate the metal state (zero-valent or ionic) during richness oscillations. [Pg.246]

Liquid metals are used when temperature requirement is so high that even the nitrate/nitrite salt mixture becomes unsuitable. The most commonly used liquid metal is a eutectic mixture of sodium and potassium (44%). This has a very broad temperature range (40-760°C) and very high thermal conductivity. Lead and lead-bismuth eutectic can be used up to 900° C. There are several disadvantages with the use of liquid metals. Special precautions must be taken while using alkali metals because they react violently with water and burn in air. Mercury, lead, and bismuth-based mixtures are highly toxic, hence their applications are restricted. One common use of liquid metals is in the cooling of nuclear reactors. [Pg.1219]

Metal clusters supported on solid supports are easier to use as catalysts. However, the mechanism of their action is inferred mostly indirectly from their efficiency. Multimetallic clusters are known to present enhanced catalytic properties relative to pure metals, specially when the catalyzed reaction process includes several steps. The method of radiation-induced reduction provides a powerful way to obtain homodisperse, small and alloyed clusters. [Pg.441]

In all these instances, a cartridge may either be consumed in its entirety or for ballistic reasons a metal base used, leading to a partially combustible case. The advantages of a combustible case are obvious. Enormous amounts of strategic metal would be released for other purposes and there is no question of collection and reuse of such metal. Special benefits are derived for the gunner within a tank The hot used metal cases are an encumbrance in the close quarters, and residual toxic gases from burned propellant powder remain in the conventional metal cases. [Pg.416]

CPAA can easily be applied to solid, massive samples with good thermal conductivity and available as foil or sheet slightly thicker than the range (e.g., metals). Special precautions have to be taken for powdered materials and poor thermal conductors. Analysis of liquids and gases is inconvenient. [Pg.29]

Because Teflon PFA melt is corrosive to most metals, special corrosion-resistant alloys must be used for the extrusion equipment, such as Hastelloy C, Monel 400, and Xaloy 306. Barrels, liners, screws, adapters, breaker plates, and dies are made of corrosion-resistant metals (39). Corrosion is promoted by resin degradation and high processing temperatin-es, long residence times, or dead spots. Extruders used with Teflon FEP are also suitable for PFA resins. Heaters and controllers capable of accurate operation in the range of 330-425°C are required. Extruder barrels should have three or foin- independently controlled heating zones, each equipped with its own thermocouple and temperature-indicating control. [Pg.5476]

Since the heavier transition metals prodnce larger splitting of the d orbitals than their 3d congeners [i.e., they occupy systematically higher positions in the spectrochemical series of the metals, (1)] and also present lower pairing energies, the low-spin states are favored for 4d and 5d metals, specially when combined with high oxidation states. Hence, well-characterized low-spin tetrahedral d, d", and d complexes of the type [MR4] are known for Re(IV), Ru(IV), Os(IV), Ir(V), and Ir(IV). [Pg.1414]

Lithium primary batteries contain an anode of elemental lithium (see Chap. 14) and, because of the activity of this metal, special precautions may be required in the design and use of the batteries, particularly when multiple cells are used in the battery pack. Some of the special precautions that should be taken in the design of these batteries, include the following ... [Pg.123]
