Metabolomics targeted analysis

Targeted analysis refers to metabolome analysis that targets one, or a few metabolites, and typically uses an internal standard for quantitation. The most common method is isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) [34], which relies on the use of stable isotope internal standards to enable the absolute quantitation of metabolites. This method has proven highly effective and has been successfully used in numerous studies.

There is a current trend towards development of crops with enhanced nutritional properties or health-related benefits through genetic modification of metabolic pathways. Finally, the field of metabolomics is still in its early stages of development. With advances in all the areas listed above (sample preparation, HPLC analysis, and MS analysis), the use of metabolomics to analyze metabolic pathways involving carotenoids may evolve from a simple targeted approach to a more sophisticated fingerprinting approach. 

In metabolomic studies, there are three commonly used research strategies, namely, targeted metabolomics, metabolite profiling, and analysis of metabolic fingerprints [12].
