Disadvantages of these continuous countercurrent systems are associated primarily with the complexity of the equipment required and with the attrition resulting from the transpoiT of the ion exchanger. An effective alternative for intermediate scale processes is the use of merry-go-round systems and SMB units employing only packed-beds with no movement of the ion-exchanger.

Small scale test runs prior to preparative irradiation experiments may be carried out in tubes which are either taped to the lamp housings (immersion wells) depicted in Figures 13-1 and 13-2 or placed in turntable reactors ( merry-go-rounds ). These arrangements permit the simultaneous irradiation of several samples, but only a fraction of the available light emission is used. In Figure 13-4 a simple reactor is shown which focusses almost all the emitted light into one sample which can be scaled up also to semi-preparative volumes. In this way the necessary irradiation time can be reduced sharply.

By this time Polya s Theorem had become a familiar combinatorial tool, and it was no longer necessary to explain it whenever it was used. Despite that, expositions of the theorem have continued to proliferate, to the extent that it would be futile to attempt to trace them any further. I take space, however, to mention the unusual exposition by Merris [MerRSl], who analyzes in detail the 4-bead 3-color necklace problem, and interprets it in terms of symmetry classes of tensors — an interpretation that he has used to good effect elsewhere (see [MerRSO, 80a]).

To understand this simplification, imagine a man sitting on a merry-go-round with a large placard on which several sentences are written. As long as the merry-go-round is rotating rapidly, a stationary observer may not be able to read the words on the placard as it whirls round. However, if the observer were to jump onto the merry-go-round, then the apparent circular motion of the man with the placard would disappear to the observer since the two would now have the same angular velocity, and the words on the placard would be readable.

Although atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are distinct disease states, both disorders are chronic inflammatory conditions and may have common mechanisms of disease perpetuation. At sites of inflammation, such as the arterial intima undergoing atherogen-esis or the rheumatoid joint, oxygen radicals, in the presence of transition-metal ions, may initiate the peroxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) to produce oxidatively modified LDL (ox-LDL). Ox-LDL has several pro-inflammatory properties and may contribute to the formation of arterial lesions (Steinberg et /., 1989). Increased levels of lipid peroxidation products have been detected in inflammatory synovial fluid (Rowley et /., 1984 Winyard et al., 1987a Merry et al., 1991 Selley et al., 1992 detailed below), but the potential pro-inflammatory role of ox-LDL in the rheumatoid joint has not been considered. We hypothesize that the oxidation of LDL within the inflamed rheumatoid joint plays a pro-inflammatory role just as ox-LDL has the identical capacity within the arterial intima in atherosclerosis. 

One technique to assess lipid peroxidation utilizes second-derivative spectrophotometric analysis of cyclohexane or ethanol-reconstituted extracts to determine the cis-trans and trans-trans isomeric forms of conjugated dienes and oxodiene species within synovial fluid. Using this method, a rise in the synovial fluid concentration of conjugated oxodienes, hydroxydienes and hydroperoxy-dienes was found to follow joint exercise (Merry et al., 1991). 

Further resonances attributable to the CFI3 groups of ketone bodies, predominantly 3-D-hydroxybutyrate, were also found in all synovial fluid samples studied. These data indicate an elevated utilization of frits for energy, despite the overall hypoxic environment of the synovial tissue (Merry et al., 1991 Henderson etal., 1993).
