Mental activity levels

A similar suggestion is made for maintenance of the mental activities of Mike Stroud and Ranulph Fiennes during their long trans-Antarctic expedition when, at times, their blood glucose fell to about 1 mmol/L (Chapter 13). Unfortunately the blood level of ketone bodies was not measured during this trek.

Recording electrical activity with electrodes surrounding the head made it possible to try to relate the mind to the brain. Slow electrical brain waves, called theta waves, were observed during states of low mental activity. At high degrees of arousal, fester beta waves were recorded. Alpha waves were recorded at medium levels of arousal. The greater the state of arousal, the greater the number of alpha and beta waves.

The problem is that 40%-65% of those people receiving placebos also report improvement of their physical or mental conditions. Just the anticipation of relief, and the care by others, is enough to alleviate suffering. There is evidence that the placebo effect is centered in the brain and changes the activity levels of areas associated with pleasant and unpleasant sensations. Brain imaging has shown that metabolism of these different areas changes when cure is expected. History is full of medicines and medical devices that were claimed to effect cures, but only did so because of the placebo effect Giving people hope is one of the most powerful medicines available. 

The impacts of CO2 and CO on human health are also a consideration. CO exposure of levels down to 220 ppm may cause physiological effects such as the impairment of mental activity, headache, and irritability with enhanced levels in excess of 800 ppm causing loss of consciousness and even death if exposure is prolonged. 

If behaviour is an output of mental activity then sensory stimulation is a triggering input. AU the human senses function in essentially the same manner by taking energy in whatever form is intrinsic to the triggering stimulus and transducing this into patterns of electrical activity that are transmitted via neurons to various locations within the brain. Input analysers translate the consequent physiological activity into mental activity (Carey, 2009), much of which occurs below the level of conscious awareness (EUis and Newton, 2010). Early studies revealed that ginseng possesses biomodulatory effects on the higher centers of the central nervous system, facilitating both physical and mental activities. It has a noteworthy effect on the endocrine system, regulating the blood sugar level as demonstrated in alloxan diabetics.
