Memory-storage cards

Gonunon memory-storage cards, like those found in a digital camera, are being used as a portable patient medical archive. The cards fit into a wallet and lacilitate communication and accuracy between the various health professionals many seniors visit. A computerized medical information system wiU likely soon replace inefficient paper-based records. Such an electronic system will permit comprehensive care while anywhere in the world and coordinate the spectrum of health care services seniors receive. 

Which storage medium and platform an object is in (database, serialized in file, main memory, on a listing, in a bar code, on a magnetic stripe card, and so on)... 

A new integrator offers full compatibility and support of the HP 6890 series GC features, and includes gas-saver mode, split valve control and post-run programming. It also contains two new industry-standard Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) slots to accommodate long-term data storage and prints the run-deviation log after each analysis. 

Originally, computer information was contained in memory and printed to punch cards. When you wanted to retrieve the data, you ran the punch cards back into a special reader the information was read back into memory and could then be used. This proved to be a very limited storage medium in terms of capacity and ease of retrieval. A single page of data could take several pages of punch cards. Also, the punch card order was very important. The cards had to be put into the reader in the correct order or the program wouldn t run correctly. Hopefully you kept the cards in their correct order—God forbid you dropped them on the floor or some jokester shuffled them. 

DMA (direct memory access) A method of transferring information directly from a mass-storage device such as a hard disk or from an adapter card into memory (or vice versa), without the information passing through the processor. 

The microcomputer system chosen is based on the Pro-Log 8821 processor card which uses the Intel 8080A microprocessor. In addition, this card contains lk bytes of RAM memory and sockets for up to 4k bytes of EPROM memory containing the programs used in data collection and communication. The system also contains 32k bytes of RAM memory for data storage. Analog to digital...

Most systems offer limited internal image storage by means of on-board removable computer disks (CDs), miniature flash disks. Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards, or other reusable storage devices. Limited image analysis software may also be incorporated into the field-portable instrument.
