Erasable memory

At this stage, we are confident that a clear connection between Levy statistics and critical random events is established. We have also seen that non-Poisson renewal yields a class of GME with infinite memory, from within a perspective resting on trajectories with jumps that act as memory erasers. The non-Poisson and renewal character of these processes has two major effects. The former will be discussed in detail in Section XV, and the latter will be discussed in Section XVI. The first problem has to do with decoherence theory. As we shall see, decoherence theory denotes an approach avoiding the use of wave function collapses, with the supposedly equivalent adoption of quantum densities becoming diagonal in the pointer basis set. In Section XV we shall see that the decoherence theory is inadequate to derive non-Poisson renewal processes from quantum mechanics. In Section XVI we shall show that the non-Poisson renewal properties, revealed by the BQD experiments, rule out modulation as a possible approach to complexity. [Pg.361]

The practical use of photochromic dyes as memory layers in erasable and rewritable data storage disks fails not only because of their physical limitations (lacking sensitivity, insufficient stabiHty, low number of cycles), but also because the diode lasers required for switching in the visible range (wavelength between 450 and 600 nm) and the uv-range (around 350 nm) are not available. [Pg.151]

ROM, PROM, EPROM is Read Only Memory, Programmable Read Only Memory and Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory and are used for rapid sourees of information that seldom, or never need to be modified. [Pg.198]

To minimize the risk of data loss because of power failure or other reasons, the Mossbauer data are copied to a nonvolatile EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) every 9 minutes (software selectable). As the size of the EEPROM is smaller than the SRAM, the EEPROM can accumulate only up to ten Mossbauer spectra as a subset of the data from the SRAM. These spectra are obtained from the SRAM according to a pre-defined summation strategy. [Pg.66]

CD-R was something of a surprise invention as, in the late 1980s, most of the major manufacturers in the optical memory area were commercializing the non-standard and relatively expensive WORM media, while focusing their research and development efforts on erasable optical storage. It was also believed that a writeable CD-Audio/CD-ROM-compatible medium was not feasible, due to the high reflectivity needed to meet the CD standard as defined by the Red and Orange Books.196... [Pg.605]

Photochemical switching of the phase transition is also found in the polyion complex film. Figure 29 shows reversible cycles of the absorption at 370nm by the coupling of the thermal and photoinduced phase transition of the complex film with carboxymethylcellulose 8. In conclusion, we indicate that the immobilized bilayer membranes containing the azobenzene chromophore are available to the erasable memory materials based on the phase transition triggered by thermal and photochemical processes. The polyion complex technique is clearly shown to be a very useful method for materialization of the immobilized bilayer membranes. [Pg.79]

Part A 40 minutes calculator allowed (no qwerty keyboards). Any programmable or graphing calculator may be used and you will not be required to erase the calculator memories before or after the examination. Questions require mathematical computations. It is essential that you show all steps in solving mathematical problems since partial credit is awarded in each problem for showing how the answer was obtained. [Pg.13]

The number of typical paths generated by the random process increases as exp(/ifl). In this regard, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy per unit time is the rate of production of information by the random process. On the other hand, the time-reversed entropy per unit time is the rate of production of information by the time reversals of the typical paths. The thermodynamic entropy production is the difference between these two rates of information production. With the formula (101), we can recover a result by Landauer [50] and Bennett [51] that erasing information in the memory of a computer is an irreversible process of... [Pg.122]

It is a matter of debate whether memories can be erased at all (Jacobs and Nadel 1985). However, there is some evidence from animal experiments that processes that lead to learning or LTP-induced changes in interneuronal communication can be reversed by specific opponents of the consolidation cascade, as for instance phosphatases (Genoux et al. 2002 Lin et al. 2003a,b). The decay of both LTP and memory seems to depend on NMDA receptors. However, there are conflicting data as to whether recurrent activation of NMDA receptors promotes decay or long-term consolidation processes (Shimizu et al. 2000 Villarreal et al. 2002). [Pg.20]

Photochromic or phototropic dye stuffs are used as the basis of photochemical high speed memory with an erasable image. They can also be used as automatic variable density filters for example as Q-switches in high intensity lasers. For thermochromic substances colour change is observed on change of temperature (spirans, bianthrones). [Pg.234]
