Polyamide hydrophilic membrane

The formulator must be aware of the potential for binding when filtering protein solutions. Because of the cost of most protein materials, a membrane should be used that minimizes protein adsorption to the membrane surface. Typical filter media that minimize this binding include hydrophilic polyvinylidene difluoride and hydroxyl-modified hydrophilic polyamide membranes [17a]. Filter suppliers will evaluate the compatibility of the drug product with their membrane media and also validate bacterial retention of the selected membrane. [Pg.396]

The nature of the supporting membrane also plays an important role in the performance of supporting ionic liquid membranes. In this context, de los Rios et al. [3] nsed two polymeric membranes, nylon and mitex, as supporting membranes. Nylon membrane was a hydrophilic polyamide membrane with a pore size of 0.45 pm and a thickness of 170 pm. Mitex membrane was a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene membrane with a pore size of 10 pm and a thickness of 130 pm. Figure 13.9 gives an example of droplet volume density distributions of emulsions obtained by pressing an emulsion premix through a membrane at transmembrane pressure differences varying from 3 bar to 11 bar. These pressure differences are 7.5- to 27.5-fold the minimum pressure difference required (capillary pressure). A hydrophilic polyamide membrane with a mean pore size of 0.8 pm was used. The emulsion premix consisted of 20% dispersed phase (vegetable oil). As continuous phase water containing emulsifier Tween 80 at a concentration of 2% was used. Geong and coworkers reported a new concept for the formation of zeolite/ polymer mixed-matrix reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by interfacial polymerization of mixed-matrix thin films in situ on porous polysulfone (PSF) supports [83]. The mixed-matrix films comprise NaA zeoHte nanoparticles dispersed within 50-200 nm polyamide films. It was found that the surface of the mixed-matrix films was smoother, more hydrophilic and more negatively charged than the surface of the neat polyamide RO membranes. These NaA/polyamide mixed-matrix membranes were tested for a water desalination application. It was demonstrated that the pure water permeability of the mixed-matrix membranes at the highest nanoparticle loadings was nearly doubled over that of the polyamide membranes with equivalent solute rejections. The authors also proved that the micropores of the NaA zeolites played an active role in water permeation and solute rejection. [Pg.346]

The requirement of hydrophilicity in barrier materials has been widely accepted, but the mechanism by which it affects membrane performance, especially for the permselectivity, is not fully understood. Two main criteria for the membrane selection are pore size and material. As peroxidases usually have sizes in the range of 10-80 kDa, ultrafiltration membranes with a molecular cutoff between 1 and 50 kDa are the most adequate to prevent enzyme leakage [99]. The materials commonly applied to ultrafiltration membranes are synthetic polymers (nylon, polypropylene, polyamide, polysulfone, cellulose and ceramic materials [101]. The adequate material depends on a great number of variables. When enzyme is immobilized into the matrix, this must be prepared at mild conditions to preserve the enzymatic activity. In the case of enzyme immobilization onto the membrane, this should be activated with the reactive groups necessary to interact with the functional groups of the enzyme. If an extractive system is considered, the selection of the hydrophilicity or hydro-phobicity of the membrane should be performed according to the features of reactants, products, and solvents. Polymer films have been obtained by plasma polymerization of hexafluorobenzene, N-vinylpyrrolidine, and chloracrylonitrile (Munro). Higuchi et al. have shown that irradiation of an azobenzene-modified poly(Y-methyl-L-glutamate-CO-L-glutamic acid) in bilayer membrane vesicles of distearyldimethylammonium chloride leads to trans-cis isomerization of the polymer this leads to transfer of the polypeptide from the hydrophobic bilayer membrane interior to the hydrophilic surface. The MF membranes are usually made from natural or synthetic polymers such as cellulose acetate (CA), polyvinylidene difiuoride, polyamides, polysulfone, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and polytetrafiuoroethylene (FIFE) (13). Some of the newer MF membranes are ceramic membranes based on alumina, membranes formed during the anodizing of aluminium, and carbon membrane. Glass is being used as a membrane material. The properties of membrane materials are directly reflected in their end applications.
