Many industrial yams have specific surface function requirements. For technical yams the market share for composites or coated fabrics is almost 70%. Furthermore, textile applications also can benefit from a special surface treatment in order to improve the water repellency. Capillary membranes for dialysis, however, have totally different requirements enhanced biocompatibility of the membranes is needed.4-6... 

It is expected that the intermacromolecular complexes display entirely new physical and chemical characteristics different from those of the individual polymer components. So the following applications are, for example, considered membranes for dialysis, ultrafiltration, fuel cells and battery separators, wearing apparel, electrically conductive and antistatic coatings for textiles, medical and surgical prosthetic materials, environmental sensors or chemical detectors, and electrodes modified with specific polymers. 

Insoluble polymers or polymers with a low rate of solution are used more to form thin films, as film-coating materials, surgical dressings or membranes for dialysis or filtration or to form matrices for enveloping dmgs to control their release properties or simply as packaging materials.

Other uses are found in plastic surgery, artificial skin and blood substitutes. An unique field is found in membranes for dialysis. PE, mostly linear (including UHMW), serves in many implants or in artificial joints. PVC is the most useful polymer in medicine, in plasticized form for flexible tubing, dialysis and infusion systems. PP is offered for disposible injections and, together with ethylene (copolymer), in blood bags. PS serves as a substitute for glass in tubes, bottles and petri dishes, and as the copolymers SAN or ABS in a wide host of uses. Polyester (PET) is used in sewing threads or nets in prostheses. PC is used (as a replacement for cellophane) in membranes for dialysis as well as in blood pumps and other systems.

Membranes for dialysis and membrane-assisted liquid-liquid extraction Depending on the hydrop-hobicity of a porous polymer membrane and the solutions in contact with it, the membrane pores can be filled with the feed solution, the receiver solution, or a mixture of both solutions. If both solutions are miscible (e.g., aqueous) the separation of the analyte is based on dialysis, while if they are immiscible the separation process is often referred to as MALLE.
