Melt flow rate test method

ISO 4440-1 1994 Thermoplastics pipes and fittings - determination of melt-flow rate - test method. [Pg.100]

The Melt Flow Rate Test is a method used to characterise polymer melts. It is, in effect, a single point ram extruder test using standard testing conditions (BS... [Pg.373]

The melt flow index test method is used to monitor the quality of plastie materials. The quality of the material is indicated in this test by melt flow rate through a specified die under preseribed conditions of temperature, load, and piston position in the barrel as timed measurement is being made. The melt flow rate through a specified capillary die is inversely proportional to the melt viscosity of the material if the melt flow rate is measured under constant load and temperature. The melt viseosity of the material or MFR is related to the moleeular weight of the material if the molecular structures are the same. The extrusion plastometer as specified in... [Pg.31]

ASTM D1238-04c Standard Test Method for Melt Flow Rates of Thermoplastics by Extrusion Plastometer, Book of Standards Vol. 08.011, ASTM International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials), West Conshohocken, PA, USA. [Pg.448]

Homopolymer PP is marketed mainly by melt flow rate (MFR) and additive formulation into fiber, film, sheet, and injection molding applications. Melt flow rate is an indicator of the weight-average molecular weight as measured by the ASTM or ISO MFR test method. [Pg.17]

ASTM D1238-04C, Standard test method for melt flow rates of thermoplastics by extrn-sion plastometer, 2004. [Pg.118]

Melt-flow rate measurements were obtained using ASTM D 1238 test method. [Pg.360]

Piston Cylinder (Extrusion). Pressure-driven piston cylinder capillary viscometers, ie, extmsion rheometers (Fig. 25), are used primarily to measure the melt viscosity of polymers and other viscous materials (21,47,49,50). A reservoir is connected to a capillary tube, and molten polymer or another material is extmded through the capillary by means of a piston to which a constant force is appHed. Viscosity can be determined from the volumetric flow rate and the pressure drop along the capillary. The basic method and test conditions for a number of thermoplastics are described in ASTM D1238. Melt viscoelasticity can influence the results (160). [Pg.182]

Too little has been published about the flow properties of PET as a criterion for processing. The results of melt flow index (MFI) testing conditions do not correlate with the processing behavior in the case of PET. This may be caused by the discrepancy between the shear rates in testing and processing. MFI is defined as the amount of polymer melt (in g) extruded within 10 min through an orifice of specified diameter at a standard load and temperature. In the case of PET, this method was not very popular until recently due to the sensitivity of this material to hydrolytic degradation. [Pg.446]
