Mechanical Aerators. Mechanical aerators are modular ia design and built usiag electric motors. This type of aerator is also known as a surface splasher because it pumps water vertically iato the air. During this process the water is broken up iato small droplets allowiag exchange of oxygen from the air to the water. One type of mechanical aerator is shown ia Figure 3e. [Pg.341]

In addition to the basic control loops, all processes have instrumentation that (1) sounds alarms to alert the operator to any abnormal or unsafe condition, and (2) shuts down the process if unsafe conditions are detected or equipment fails. For example, if a compressor motor overloads and the electrical control system on the motor shuts down the motor, the rest of the process will usually have to be shut down immediately. This type of instrumentation is called an interlock. It either shuts a control valve completely or drives the control valve wide open. Other examples of conditions that can interlock a process down include failure of a feed or reflux pump, detection of high pressure or temperature in a vessel, and indication of high or low liquid level in a tank or column base. Interlocks are usually achieved by pressure, mechanical, or electrical switches. They can be included in the computer software in a computer control system, but they are usually hard-wired for reliability and redundancy. [Pg.226]

Samples of punch-and-die pressing can be produced in a variety of home made or purchased small machines. The previously mentioned force/pressure test stands (Fig. 11.18), which may also use hydraulic actuation with hand or motor pumps, can be applied in connection with home made punch-and-die arrangements. Many laboratories are equipped with automatically or hand operated hydraulic laboratory presses, for example as shown in Fig. 11.20 (see also Fig. 8.92, Section 8.4.3). From the suppliers of such machines a large number of simple or sometimes highly sophisticated and automated presses are available. They are used for the determination of a variety of strength and force or pressure related product characteristics and, although the densification and compaction mechanisms are quite different from those of roller presses and can not be correlated, punch-and-die compacts are often made and evaluated to preliminarily investigate the compactibility of different feed materials or powder mixtures and to determine the type and amount of potential binders. [Pg.481]

The pump is a plunger type, suspended in the liquid-nitrogen dewar by means of three long, thin stainless steel bars. A stainless steel rod connects the piston to the crank mechanism. In order to maintain smooth reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder, a room-temperature 0-ring is located at the top of the dewar.
