MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF EPOXY RESINS AND GLASS/EPOXY COMPOSITES AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES. 

Tang et at [36] investigated the mechanical properties of epoxy resins filled with different amoxmts of soft rubber particles and/or rigid silica nanoparticles, with special focus on the related mechanical and fracture behaviors. Additionally, increases in fracture toughness by the rigid particles addition in polypropylene [37,38] and polyethylene [38, 39] were addressed in some researches. 

Van de Voorde found the strength of Epikote 828 decreases sharply after low temperature irradiation of 10 rad. Nishijima and Okada also studied the mechanical properties of epoxy resin after neutron irradiation and y-ray irradiation at low temperature. The present experiments show that the stress-strain curves after irradiation are strongly dependent on the kind of hardener. The strength of epoxy resin hardened by polyamide shows a remarkable decrease after low temperature irradiation.

Epoxy resins are resistant to most inorganic salts and their aqueous solutions, including those with oxidizing properties. The mechanical properties of epoxy resins change very little under the influence of salts and their aqueous solutions, even over longer periods at higher temperatures [32],... 

Sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and hydrochloric acid penetrate easily into amine or polyamide cured epoxy resins here, hydrochloric acid exhibits the highest diffusion rate. Penetration depth is proportional to the square root of exposure time. Penetration rate increases with acid concentration, reaching a peak at 25% sulfuric acid and 40% phosphoric acid at higher concentrations it decreases again. The mechanical properties of epoxy resins are strongly influenced by sulfuric, phosphoric, and hydrochloric acid [32]. 

Epoxy resins are considered resistant to microorganisms, although mold has been detected in some cases. The mechanical properties of epoxy resins are not changed [32].
