Mechanical and thermal stability

Pure Pd membranes become brittle upon thermal cycling in a H2 atmosphere due to a phase transition between the different Pd hydride phases (a and P) with distinctly different crystal lattice parameters (see Fig. 11.3). Allojting with various other metals (for example Ag, Ru, Rh) tends to lower the phase transition temperature and under some circumstances improves the hydrogen permeability. The phase transition problem is not technically insurmountable, if good care is exercised during start-up (when the membrane is first exposed to hydrogen) [Pg.534]

Although hollow fibers are thought to be an excellent candidate to be used as support-they are cheap and have a very high surface area to volume (>1000 m m ) - very few reports on hollow-fiber-supported zeolite membranes exist in the open literature. For zeohte membranes, ceramic hollow fibers are preferred because of their mechanical and thermal stability. Recently, Alshebani... [Pg.229]

Blends of sulfonated polymers and polymers containing basic moieties have also been made. Represented schematically in Figure 3.35, ionic cross-linking between acidic and basic sites generally leads to improved mechanical and thermal stabilities. strong interactions within these blends results... [Pg.162]

We have seen that one of the key aspects of Fourier transform NIR analyzers is their control of frequency accuracy and long-term reproducibility of instrument line shape through the use of an internal optical reference, normally provided as a HeNe gas laser. Such lasers are reasonably compact, and have acceptable lifetimes of around 3 to 4 years before requiring replacement. However, we also saw how the reduction in overall interferometer dimensions can be one of the main drivers towards achieving the improved mechanical and thermal stability which allows FT-NIR devices to be deployed routinely and reliably in process applications. [Pg.133]

Qi et al. studied perovskite systems obtained by partially replacing La with Ce at the A-site of LaNi03 for ATR of gasoline and its subrogate n-octane with or without thiophene additive. They found similar activities and mechanical and thermal stabilities with both pellet and monolith Lao.8Ceo.2Ni03 [73]. [Pg.297]

The realization that tubules may be formed on temperature reduction of polymerized SUVs, prepared from polymerizable diacetylenic phosphatidylcholines (21 where n = 7-16 and m = 5-11), represented a major breakthrough in obtaining the desired supramolecular structure [355-360]. In the initial experiments, 0.4- to 1.0-pm-diameter and 10- to 1000-pm-long tubules were prepared by the gradual lowering of the temperature (to about 38 °Q of 21 (m = 8, n = 9) SUVs [358]. The walk of the tubules had thickness of 10-40 nm and were coated by spiral ripples and helical bilayer strips. Many tubules contained trapped SUVs. Polymerization of the acetylenic moieties greatly enhanced the mechanical and thermal stabilities of the tubules [355-360]. [Pg.63]

Epoxies show superior adhesion to metals and glass, and have limited shrinkage during cure. They are used for surface coatings, as adhesives and rc>r laminating to produce plastic tanks, pipe, and aircraft parts, etc (Ref 3, p 445-R). They also have been used in manuf of plastics (Ref 1), construction of rockets St missiles (Ref 2) and in manuf of explosive compositions of improved mechanical and thermal stability (Ref 4)... [Pg.750]

Optical sensors display several advantages over electronic sensors. Since photons rather than electrons carry the information, they are almost immune to electrical interference. Usually the optical components are made from glass chips or fibre-optic cable fibres, giving them excellent mechanical and thermal stability and often, moreover, a high chemical resistivity. Finally the use of glass, especially fibre-optic, fibres helps to minimise the size and weight of these sensors. Optical sensors, especially fibre-optic sensors have been the subject of several recent reviews [116-120]. [Pg.114]

The separation performance of membranes with nonporous barriers is - because of the transport via solution-diffusion (cf. Section 2.2) - predominantly influenced by the polymer material itself. Therefore, the material selection is directly related to the intrinsic (bulk) properties of the polymer, but - as for porous membranes - filmforming properties, mechanical and thermal stability form the basis of applicability (cf. Section 2.3.2.1). The following characteristics should be considered ... [Pg.25]

PMO materials that are constructed from bis-silylated precursors may be regarded as MCM-41 /SBA-15 phases in which, in the ideal case, a quarter of all Si—O—Si units is replaced by Si—R—Si units, which corresponds to a formal molecular formula of [Ro.sSiOi 5]. Unlike the bivalent oxygen atom, however, the organic bridges can in principle form bonds to more than two silicon atoms. In this way, the structural motifs already realized in PMOs can be extended considerably. At the same time, the mechanical and thermal stability of PMOs may be increased, since tris- and multi-silylated precursors can act as cross-linkers. [Pg.81]

At 360°C-370°C, an important increase in the apparent initial viscosity begins that corresponds to the complete degradation of the initial material and to the carbonization of the system. The foamed material appears to be constituted by solid particles only. From 450°C-460°C, the viscosity value is more stable and increases slightly. At this temperature, a char oxidation/degradation probably starts. Complementarity, the viscosity can be analyzed versus temperature and versus time (Figure 10.10) in order to better visualize the mechanical and thermal stabilities of the protective intumescent layer and to have a better understanding of the carbonization process. [Pg.248]

To conclude this section, it is necessary to state that Pd and Pd-based membranes are currently the membranes with the highest hydrogen permeability and selectivity. However, the cost, availability, their mechanical and thermal stabilities, poisoning, and carbon deposition problems have made the large-scale industrial application of these dense metal membranes difficult, even when prepared in a composite configuration [26,29,33-37],... [Pg.471]

In order to become a viable alternative, MIP-based assays need to offer an added value to the conventional antibody-based immunoassays. Some characteristics of the MIP-based assays are summarised in Table 14.1. Superior characteristics of MIPS in comparison to antibodies are observed with respect to chemical, mechanical and thermal stability. The MIPs are compatible with autoclave conditions (120°C, 20 min) and are unaffected by acid and base treatment [7]. In fact, to achieve as complete removal of imprint molecules as possible, in the author s laboratory it is routine to include a wash step with 5 M sodium hydroxide in the MIP synthesis work-up protocol. The possibility of using a wider range of assay solvents, namely both aqueous and organic solvents, enables the solubility of the analyte to be assured and problems with non-specific adsorption minimised. Furthermore, high polymer stability leads to improved shelf life, where the MIP can be stored for several years in the dry state at ambient temperatures. [Pg.343]

Diamond has a low heat capacity, a low thermal expansion coefficient, and a high mechanical and thermal stability. These properties are very useful for devices using high dynamic thermal stress such as ink-jet heads. Indeed, ink-jet heads were fabricated using diamond films [17, 422]. Figure 13.8 shows a thermal actuator... [Pg.272]

The elevated mechanical and thermal stabilities of pellicular stationary phases having a solid, fluid-impervious core have favored the development of nonporous particles tailored for the rapid HPLC analysis of peptides, proteins, and other biopolymers. Most of these applications are in RPC. [Pg.1129]

Most commercial steam reforming catalysts contain metaUic Ni supported on an oxide such as AljOj, MgO, and MgAl O. Ni is the catalyst of choice because of its high activity toward C-H bond cleavage and low cost. The oxide supports offer superior mechanical and thermal stability under the reaction conditions [18],... [Pg.277]
