McMurray

The Great Canadian Oil Sands, Ltd. (GCO) (Sun Oil Co.) has been operating a plant at Eort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, since 1967. Initially, some 8050 t/d (55,000 bbl/d) of synthetic cmde oil was produced from coking (158) with the project expanding to 9220 t/d (63,000 bbl/d). Since 1978, Syncmde Canada has been producing ca 22,000 m /d (140,000 bbl) synthetic cmde oil by fluid coking from their plant at Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada (159) with expansion planned for ca 35,000 m /d (225,000 bbl/d).

Information on the excretion of americium after dermal exposure in humans or animals is extremely limited. Some qualitative information is available from an accidental exposure in which a worker received facial wounds from projectile debris and nitric acid during an explosion of a vessel containing 241 Am (McMurray 1983). The subject also inhaled 241Am released to the air as dust and nitric acid aerosols, which was evident from external chest measurements of internal radioactivity thus, excretion estimates reflect combined inhalation, dermal, and wound penetration exposures (Palmer et al. 1983). Materials. Samples of dewatered crude oils were obtained from the Athabasca oil sands of the McMurray formation by extraction using the commercial hot water process (Suncor Inc.) the Bl uesky-Bu11 head formation at Peace River, Alberta by solvent extraction of produced fluids the Clearwater formation at Cold Lake, Alberta by solvent extraction of core material and the Karamay formation in Xing-Jiang, China. A summary of the physical and chemical properties of the crude oils, including chemical composition, and density-temperature and viscosity-temperature relationships, is given in Table I.
