Maximum depth of penetration

In testing penetration of armor, etc, by various projectiles, they can be fired against armor plate of varying thickness and compn until the maximum depth of penetration is detd ... [Pg.653]

Larger 3- and 4-m.e.v. Dynamitron electron beam accelerators are likewise available commercially. Service capabilities increase with the m.e.v. level of the electron beam accelerator. A 3.0-m.e.v. Dynamitron electron beam accelerator furnishes radiation capable of penetrating a maximum 370 mils of a unit density material or 185 mils of 2.0-density material other performance capabilities are doubled as well. The overwhelming majority of polyolefin plastic products now being manufactured have section thicknesses which can be penetrated safely even by a 1.5-m.e.v. electron beam accelerator. Two possible exceptions would be printed circuit board and thick-walled pipe. A 3-m.e.v. accelerator could readily meet such requirements. The performance capabilities of the 3-m.e.v. accelerator (12-ma. power supply) are increased not only with respect to maximum depth of penetration but also processing capability, which amounts to 14,000 megarad-pounds per hour at 50% absorption efficiency. [Pg.178]

Separating the variables involved and integrating the equations between Mpo and 0, the distance the particle traveled in the first decelerating stage, i.e., the maximum depth of penetration into the opposed stream, xmax, can be obtained as... [Pg.50]

Kuts et al. [35] studied the relationship between the maximum depth of penetration into the opposing stream, xmM, and the diameter of the particle, dp, in the ranges of dp = 100-1000 pm and xm.M = 0.01-0.11 m the results are illustrated in Fig. 2.3. The results of the theoretical analysis are in the Stokes and the transient regimes jtmax is positively in proportion to dp and dp5, respectively. It can be seen from Fig. 2.3 that the results theoretically predicted fit the experimental data relatively well. [Pg.52]

As stated previously, a saline soil is one with saturated paste EC in excess of 4dS/m. Reclamation is indicated when the salt level limits or alters the intended land use. The only way to reclaim a saline soil is to leach it with fresh water. Soluble salts are carried with the water to a maximum depth of penetration that will prevent the return of salt by capillary action. [Pg.177]

Metallographic examination revealed limited intergranular corrosion at the casting surface. The measured maximum depth of penetration was 100 p,m after 300 hours of testing. Intergranular corrosion usually progresses linearly with time and, therefore, a maximum depth of penetration of only 0.5 mm is expected after a service life of the car engine equivalent to 160,000 km. [Pg.81]

Because microwaves can heat substances uniformly to their maximum depth of penetration, an individual who is irradiated could sustain severe deep tissue damage. The consequences of microwave injury are quite varied. The list below details some of the effects of exposure to microwaves. [Pg.226]
