The purpose of this chapter is to describe the properties and applications for refractory oxides. The sections that follow describe applications, review fundamental chemical and physical aspects, introduce processing methods, list important physical properties, and discuss materials selection criteria for refractory oxides. The organization of this chapter reflects that the performance of ceramic materials depend on interrelationships among structure, processing, and inherent properties. 

This section will discuss problems that can complicate the selection procedure. Such problems include the variability of materials selection criteria, conflicting project objectives such as minimizing capital cost, and mandatory criteria such as those in governing engineering codes. Other topics discussed include organization of the information needed for the materials selection process, a procedure for materials selection, and the use of a materials selection diagram. 

Table 32.8 compares the properties of AI2O3 to some of the other materials evaluated as candidate lamp-envelope materials. In addition to satisfying the materials selection criteria given above, AI2O3 also has a significant advantage over the other materials listed in Table 32.8 because it has superior thermal shock resistance.
