There was more. A strain gauge on each mask would indicate the airflow, and a small tube would divert a sample of the aerosol to the spectrophotometers, designed to calculate cumulative dosage in real time. Airtight Plexiglas windows would provide visual access to the volunteers. Auditory input would feed into each soldier s earpiece from a microphone in the booth. 

Filtration is provided by a C2A1 canister attached to the mask by a corrugated hose the canister is housed in a specially designed canister carrier. The M42 integrates with the combat vehicle filtration protection system. The M42 also has a dynamic microphone that integrates with the combat vehicle via a microphone cable.19,20... 

The facepiece of the M43 Chemical-Biological Aircraft Mask is fabricated of bromo butyl and natural rubber with an integral butyl hood and skull-type suspension system (Figure 16-10). The M43 has two models, designated Type I and Type II. The two models are identical with the following exceptions Type I has a notch in the right eyepiece that accommodates a special sighting device used by Apache helicopter pilots, and uses a different microphone for communication Type II has two spherical lenses and uses a dynamic microphone. Both microphones interface with the helicopter communications systems. 

Air-flow measurement A mask and measuring apparatus can be used for measuring air flow from the mouth and separately from the nose. This is particularly useful in that we can measure the outputs from the nose and mouth separately, and we can do this in terms of air-flow signals rather than the pressure signals which microphones record. 

The Input Modules on the mixer are where the various instruments and microphones are plugged in. They correspond to ACID tracks, each of which also has a part of the total mix in the form of a media file or loop. Along the top of each Input Module you may find a piece of masking tape with the name of the input. Of course, ACID tracks can easily he renamed without a magic marker. 

Wireless communication on SCBA s and respirators protect breathing only to create another problem. The wearer cannot communicate. The SCBA voice coupler comprises a miniature microphone capsule applied to the inside of the faceplate, electromagnetically coupled to a receiver module attached to the outside surface of the faceplate. The voice coupler does not violate the integrity of the faceplate. The throat microphone system utilizes a rugged dynamic-type throat microphone sealed in durable nontoxic vinyl. These systems are adapted easily to all ctHnmunication systems, providing clear voice communication from within the mask.
