The formal study of CA really began not with the simpler one-dimensional systems discussed in the previous section but with von Neumann s work in the 1940 s with self-reproducing two-dimensional CA [vonN66]. Such systems also gained considerable publicity (as well as notoriety ) in the 1970 s with John Conway s introduction of his Life rule and its subsequent popularization by Martin Gardner in his Scientific American Mathematical Games department [gardner83] (see section 3.4-4). [Pg.116]

Significant improvement of tantalum powder properties was achieved by the application of molten alkali halides as solvents for potassium heptafluorotantalate, K2TaF7. Variation of the initial concentration of K2TaF7 in the melt, stirring and rate of sodium loading enable a well-controllable production of tantalum powder with a wide variety of specific charges. Heller and Martin [590] proposed the use of a reactor equipped with a stirrer in 1960. Fig. 142 shows a typical scheme of the reactor [24, 576]. All metal parts of the reactor are made of nickel or nickel alloy. [Pg.331]

A number of additional methods have been proposed to target CH4 emissions such as the use of bacteriophages and bacteriocins (McAllister and Newbold, 2008), defaunation, and reductive acetogenesis (Martin et ah, 2010 McAllister and Newbold, 2008). Additional research is needed as well as animal trials for potential use on dairy farms. [Pg.66]

The averaged function e(y/dc) can be well represented by a relationship established by Martin [7] consisting of a parabolic and an attenuated cosine part. The parameters for Eqs. (3.2.14) and (3.2.15) given by Martin were newly determined based on MRI results of the type shown in Figure 3.2.9. The differing curves shown in Figure 3.2.9 can be taken as proof of the difficulty of measuring e with conventional means. Data... [Pg.259]

HPLC allows a quantitative determination with relatively simple extractions. In many cases, extraction only involves a heating of the commodity with water, followed by filtration and injection onto an HPLC column. In the determination of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline in cocoa, coffee, or tea, as well as in other foods, there is scarcely a month that passes without a new paper on this assay. Kreiser and Martin provide typical conditions for analysis.28 In their studies, samples were extracted in boiling water and filtered prior to injection onto the HPLC column. The HPLC conditions used a Bondapak reversed phase column and a mobile phase of water methanol acetic acid (74 25 1) with detection at 280 nm. This method is accurate, precise, and conserves time. It has also been adopted by the AOAC as an official method for the determination of theobromine and caffeine in cocoa beans and chocolate products.29... [Pg.33]

All cell membranes contain transmembrane proteins that form ion channels. These ion channels are usually selectively permeable to particular ions. Some channels, such as GABA-gated ion channels, are permeable to Cl ions and are inhibitory in nature because they make the inside of the nerve or muscle cells more negative as the Cl ions enter. Some ion channels are permeable to the cations Na and K, and an example of this type is the nicotinic acetylcholine-gated channel. Nicotinic channels have an excitatory effect when they open because Na ions enter and K ions leave through these channels. The cell becomes more positive inside and depolarizes. If the cell is a muscle cell, calcium accumulates in the cytoplasm and it contracts. We have found that all over the surface of Ascaris muscle there are GABA receptors (Martin, 1980) as well as nicotinic acetylcholine channels (Martin, 1982 Robertson and Martin, 1993). [Pg.450]
