Marks and Spencer was formed in 1884 by Michael Marks. He opened a market stall in Leeds, with the slogan don t ask the price, it s a penny . In 1894 Marks went into a partnership with Thomas Spencer. Ten years later they opened their first shop in Leeds. The company stopped their businesses in Germany in 2001, as they wanted to concentrate mainly on the home market. 

When Marc Bolland, the new chief executive of Marks and Spencer, unveiled his long-awaited strategic blueprint last autumn, he could have quietly ditched the high street group s ambitious plan to become Britain s greenest retailer. 

Eventually, the road comes alongside the River Thurso and a few miles later you enter the town of Thurso, which somewhat has the feel of a frontier town. When asked What is Thurso like by people who have never been there, I usually say Well, its a 7-h seven hour round-trip to the nearest Marks and Spencer s, which is in Inverness . For city dwellers, this helps put it in perspective. If you are living in Caithness, despite being part of mainland Britain, you might as well be living on a separate island. 

Disinfectants, pesticides, and detergents comprise a group of chemicals that occasionally contribute taints to foods. This may be the result of inadequate care in their application by the end user or errors on the part of the cleaning compound manufacturers. The summary of taints observed at Marks and Spencer (Table 7.3) by Goldenberg and Matheson [4] provides a useful illustration of how these chemicals may enter a food and produce a taint. They noted several incidences of taints in food due to detergent contamination, which are not included in this table. 

Additional examples of OF produced in foods from MO are provided by Gold-enberg and Matheson [4]. A summary of OF they have encountered at Marks and Spencer is presented in Table 7.8. It is quite obvious from their tabulation that OF due to MO can occur in a wide variety of products.
