Marker-assisted breeding

For the FR13A project, marker-assisted breeding was very helpful because researchers could screen for the best varieties in the lab, instead of having to flood a rice field four feet deep to see if the offspring tolerate submergence, thus saving a lot of time and labor. 

Marker-assisted breeding The use of genetic fingerprinting techniques to introduce genes of interest from one plant variety to another. Relies on knowledge of DNA sequences in a particular genomic region.

Analysis in diverse lines can facilitate identification of useful alleles that control expression of enzymes upstream of the carotenoid pathway, a feature that would not be evident from conventional end-product screening of breeding lines.
