Marker assisted selection

Analysis in diverse lines can facilitate identification of useful alleles that control expression of enzymes upstream of the carotenoid pathway, a feature that would not be evident from conventional end-product screening of breeding lines. Moreover, this characterization sets the stage for marker-assisted selection of superior endogenous alleles and facilitates selection of introduced transgenes that may be necessary to supplement the genotypic contribution required for a particular plant chemical outcome. [Pg.384]

There are no varieties of morama bean that have been developed so far. However, there are advanced crop improvement experiments that are designed to produce a variety of cultivars, namely, early maturing culti-vars, using morama that matures after about 18-24 months. Microsatellite markers (Weising et ah, 1998) have been developed and used previously. Current microsatellite markers for morama beans have been developed using a modified procedure by Zane et ah (2002). These markers will be used in marker-assisted selection (MAS) for the morama bean. [Pg.193]

A genomics research-and-development component has been added to the University of Manitoba HEAR breeding program. The development of molecular markers using sequence-related amplified polymorphisms (SRAP) (Li and Quiros 2001) to provide marker-assisted selection (MAS) capabilities to the breeding effort is a major part of the genomics research-and-development program. The recent... [Pg.51]

Partners in this endeavor include USDA, university, and industry scientists. The initial focus is on healthier oil and improved protein quality. Input from the food industry indicated that there was a strong desire for a lower saturated fat and low Unolenic acid soybean oil. Ultimately the compositional traits will include a higher oleic acid content. The initiative is making use of marker-assisted selection based on Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR). The genetic sequence data will be available only to nonprofit USB BBI participants that are funded through public resources. This will allow fu-... [Pg.67]
