Managerial control

The formal SOPs shall be discussed in further detail in the next section (Evidence of Managerial Control), since they represent the high-level policy decisions of laboratory and system managers. The implementation of those policies is generally specified in the TOPs that detail user activities. 

Managerial control is estabhshed and documented through a series of SOPs. These SOPs are system design, use, and control pohcy statements. They summarize procedures of system security, disaster recovery, normal use, data archive and backup, error response, documentation, testing, and other important aspects of control. 

Many of the standard principles of managerial control are of course relevant to a project. Milestones and targets by which you can judge whether or not project objectives are satisfactorily on the road to attainment need to be set. Reports on progress need to be called for. But any attempt at a mechanistic approach to control would be quite inappropriate for ambiguous, uncertain tasks in a dynamic context, when it is hard to specify in advance which elements to control and how to do so . (Boddy and Buchanan, 1992). 

As Marglin notes, "Only a recapitulation of workers knowledge in the form of an episteme to which management alone had access would provide a firm basis for managerial control (ibid., p. 247).
