Most cormtries have put in place legislative frameworks to control arrd improve the quality of air. The general pattern of such a strategy appears in Fig. 8. While air qrrality management strategies have supranational, national, arrd local componerrts, the final task of managing air quality is usually devolved to the local level, typically that of a city, coimty, or state. 

The approach described in this chapter is developed from extant practice and can provide the nanomaterial user an initial framework from which to develop responsible risk management strategies. Likewise, insurance carriers can use the framework as an informational tool for developing policy analyses and for assessing potential clients. The combination of the framework with decision analysis tools such as MCDA can provide quantitative assessments of risk amidst significant uncertainty. 

Social risk management. A framework that can be used to analyze the sources of vulnerability, how society manages risks, and the relative costs and benefits of various public interventions on household welfare. Risk management strategies include prevention, mitigation, and coping and may use government, for profit, or private informal mechanisms. 

In the second case study, variation tree analysis and the events and causal factors chart/root cause analysis method are applied to an incident in a resin plant. This case study illustrates the application of retrospective analysis methods to identify the imderlying causes of an incident and to prescribe remedial actions. This approach is one of the recommended strategies in the overall error management framework described in Chapter 8.
