Kenaf and Roselle. These closely related bast fibers are derived from Hibiscus cannibinus and H sabdariffa (mallow family, Malvaceae), respectively. The fibers have other local names. Kenaf is grown for production in the People s Repubflc of China, Egypt, and regions of the former USSR roseUe is produced in India and Thailand. Plantation-grown kenaf is capable of growing from seedlings to 5 m at maturity in five months. It is reported to yield about 6—10 tons of dry matter per acre, nine times the yield of wood (13). [Pg.361]

Urena and Abutilon. These are less important vegetable fibers of a jute-like nature. Urena lobata (Cadillo) of the mallow family (Malvaceae) is a perennial that grows in Zaire and Brazil to a height of 4—5 m with stems 10—18 mm in diameter. Because of a lignified base, the stems are cut 20 cm above the ground. The plants are defoflated in the field and retted similarly to jute and kenaf. The retted material is stripped and washed and, in some cases. [Pg.361]

An important point is the evaluation of the models. While most methods select the best model at the basis of a criterion like adjusted R2, AIC, BIC, or Mallow s Cp (see Section 4.2.4), the resulting optimal model must not necessarily be optimal for prediction. These criteria take into consideration the residual sum of squared errors (RSS), and they penalize for a larger number of variables in the model. However, selection of the final best model has to be based on an appropriate evaluation scheme and on an appropriate performance measure for the prediction of new cases. A final model selection based on fit-criteria (as mostly used in variable selection) is not acceptable. [Pg.153]

In the absence of degeneracy the number of possible stereosequences is equal to 2" (n being the number of stereogenic centers present in the sequence). In vinyl polymers, because of the equivalence of the two directions of the chain, many sequences differ only in the way they are observed (e.g., rrmr and rmrr) and must, therefore, be considered only once. The number of independent sequences, calculated by the Frisch, Mallows, and Bovey formula 10, 44) is shown in Table 2. In hemiisotactic polymers, where strict selection criteria exist, this number is drastically reduced (100). [Pg.20]

Frisch, Mallows, and Bovey (44), and later Chujo, Kamei, and Nishioka (107) examined the same class of polymers and pointed out the existence of two series of three-center sequences that are intrinsically different, one centered on substituent A, 62, the other on B, 63 (Scheme 13). They were distinguished by different symbols, for example, by small and capital letters (108). Six three-center stereosequences and 20 five-center sequences are possible, due to the... [Pg.25]
