Malaria contact

Patients who have blood transfusion malaria are infected with the asexual erythrocytic parasites only exoerythrocytic tissue forms apparently do not develop. Plasmodium malariae has been known to produce an infection after transfusion, even when the blood was obtained from a person whose only contact with malaria was 40 years previous to the donation of blood. [Pg.613]

Varicella-zoster virus is a member of the Herpesviridae femily. The viral contagion is transmitted via aerosolized water droplets or close physical contact with infected lesions. The primary infection results in varicella or chickenpox. The varicella infection can have potentially devastating ocular sequelae the most common is anterior uveitis followed by SPK. After the primary infection, latent infection occurs in multiple ganglia throughout the body. Herpes zoster is the resultant reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus and most often occurs in elderly and immunocompromised patients. Factors such as physical and emotional trauma, immunosuppressive medications, irradiation, cancer, tuberculosis, malaria, and syphilis are known to reactivate the virus. [Pg.530]

DDT or 1,1-(2,2,2-trichloroethylidene)bis [4-chlorobenzene] Organochlorine Nerve poison, affecting sodium balance of nerve membranes, nonsystemic contact and stomach action Mosquito control for malaria eradication for crop use replaced by less persistent products 11-21... [Pg.393]

Treatment regimens vary in detail those quoted here accord with the recommendations in the British National Formulary 2002, and the BNF is a good source of contact numbers, addresses and websites to obtain expert advice on therapy and prophylaxis of malaria. [Pg.269]

The country took its toll. Of the five explorers, only one, the mathematician Carsten Niebuhr, survived, and even he contacted malaria. Seven years after he first set out, Niebuhr finally returned to Denmark and filed his report to the king. In 1772, he formally published his observations in a book which he called Travels in Arabia. [Pg.60]

Towards the end of World War 11, DDT was employed in the South Pacific to contain the spread of malaria. The US Air Force sprayed aerially many islands extensively with 220-280g of DDT per hectare. In Italy, the inner walls of entire houses were treated with up to 2g of DDT per square metre in order to ensure that the contact poison was lethal to anopheline mosquitoes, when they rested after a blood meal on such walls. The procedure had to be repeated twice a year for three to four years (Fig. 5.184). [Pg.451]

Impregnation of military uniforms with permethrin to prevent malaria and leishmania is a rare cause of contact dermatitis in soldiers. Only two among 229 subjects wearing the impregnated uniforms developed mild skin irritation (Soto et al. 1995). [Pg.1010]

Licorice extracts have been used in China in the clinical treatment of numerous illnesses (gastric and duodenal ulcers, bronchial asthma, infectious hepatitis, malaria, diabetes insipidus, contact dermatitis, etc.) with considerable success (jIANGSU). [Pg.417]
