Balz, G. Schiemann. G. Ber. Dtsch. Chem. Ges. 1927, 60, 1186. Gunther Schiemann was bom in Breslau, Germany in 1899. In 1925, he received his doctorate at Breslau, where he became an assistant professor. In 1950, he became the Chair of Technical Chemistry at Istanbul, where he extensively studied aromatic fluorine compounds.

Wolf-Dieter Deckwer studied chemistry and chemical engineering at the Technical University Berlin and in 1973 obtained his PhD degree in the Institute of Technical Chemistry at the same University. After his promotion he stayed in this institute and received the permission of teaching (Habilitation) in 1975. 

The director of this Institute, Dr. Herbert Kolbel, Professor of Technical Chemistry, has been involved during the second World War II in the development of upgrading coal to other hydrocarbons according to the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in bubble column reactors with suspended catalysts. He was interested in gaining more knowledge s on of transport processes and chemical reactions in these reactors. 

In 1976 he was appointed to Associate Professor for Technical Chemistry at the University Hannover. His research group experimentally investigated the interrelation of adsorption, transfer processes and chemical reaction in bubble columns by means of various model reactions a) the formation of tertiary-butanol from isobutene in the presence of sulphuric acid as a catalyst b) the absorption and interphase mass transfer of CO2 in the presence and absence of the enzyme carboanhydrase c) chlorination of toluene d) Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Based on these data, the processes were mathematically modelled Fluid dynamic properties in Fischer-Tropsch Slurry Reactors were evaluated and mass transfer limitation of the process was proved. In addition, the solubiHties of oxygen and CO2 in various aqueous solutions and those of chlorine in benzene and toluene were determined. Within the framework of development of a process for reconditioning of nuclear fuel wastes the kinetics of the denitration of efQuents with formic acid was investigated.

Georg Adolph Suckow, in his "Introduction to Economic and Technical Chemistry, described in 1784 the preparation of soda by burning certain marine plants such as Fucus vesiculosus, Chenopodium maritimum, and Salsola kali, and leaching it from the half-vitrified ashes. This industry flourished at Alicante, Spain, at Alexandria, Egypt, and along the coasts of Italy and France (47).

Though Glauber s writings on chemical philosophy followed the obscure, medieval transcendentalism of previous centuries, and though he elaborately advertised the remedies he dispensed, nevertheless, as a practical chemist, and as a careful and reliable recorder of the results of the experiments of himself and others, Glauber set a new landmark in technical chemistry, and insured for himself a deserved place in the history of the arts of chemistry.
