In practice, what does this imply Without going into detail, it must be stated that such a way of working is only possible if the laboratory has foreseen — a priori action — that repetition of the task can be undertaken and that this is the way customers should be handled. Quality work can only be produced in an organised system a quality system. It involves all aspects of the laboratory that affect the production of results people (analysts, managers, administrators), infrastructure (buildings, equipment), supply (chemicals, reference materials etc.) and control of third parties (maintenance companies, security auditors etc.). Everything must be up to date goods and people. 

Ordnance and Supply Units. Explosive Ordnance Detachments normally handle or coordinate the removal of all unexploded ordnance. The Industrial Operations Command (IOC) assists in the removal, storage and processing of equipment from the battlefield. Preventive medicine units need to coordinate with both the maintenance companies and IOC to ensure proper health physics practices. The Army Materiel Command (AMC) is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) license s holder for most of the radioactive items in the field. 

Early in November 1943, First Lieutenant Howard D. Beckstrom of the US 701st Chemical Maintenance Company based at Baltimore received orders to prepare to go abroad. He was one of an elite group of chemical warfare experts. Trained at a special centre at Camp Sibert in Alabama, it was one of Beckstrom s jobs to supervise the movement of chemical munitions. His destination on this occasion, he was informed, was the main supply point for the Allied armies in Italy the Adriatic port of Bari. His cargo was part of the vast American chemical stockpile 100 tons of mustard gas. 

It is difficult to imagine any producer feeling comfortable with the idea of accoimtability without influence. There are, however, several other parties with a vested interest in the fulfilment of producer responsibility. If a producer is taken out of business because of non-compliance with regulations, then subsuppliers, service and maintenance companies, refurbishing firms and end-of-life industries all lose a client. All these actors in the life cycle chain can be motivated to contribute to a solution to the end-of-life problem. 

The construction and maintenance companies role is different to that of the industrial production so that solutions to certain problems have been particularly developed for this sector. 

The needs of gas warfare readiness, therefore, set the pattern for prewar CWS planning for service units. The prescribed standard for a wartime situation, in which the existence or at least the imminence of gas warfare was taken for granted, called for the assignment of a chemical depot company, decontamination company, laboratory company, impregnating company (as the processing company was then called), and maintenance company to each field army, with additional... 

The platoons were organized into functional sections. Nevertheless, experience in the field throughout the war showed that under the pressure of combat requirements the work of maintenance companies often left prescribed organizational patterns behind. 

Chemical maintenance companies were not as extensively utilized in the Pacific war as they were in Europe. Only two maintenance companies got west of Hawaii, and one of these, the loth, ended the war... 

The shortage of mortar spare parts harassed battalion commanders from the early days of the Normandy fighting and remained unsolved throughout most of the European operations. The solution of this problem was a primary mission of a CWS spare parts team which visited the Continent during the winter of 1944-45. In its final report the Spare Parts Team praised the work done by the chemical maintenance companies on the component parts of the mortar.
