Machinery protective measures

The construction OSHA rules at 1926.20(b)(4) requires that only employees quahfied by training or experience can operate equipment and machinery. At 1926.21(b)(3) OSHA requires that employees required to handle or use poisons, caustics, and other harmful substances shall be instructed regarding the safe handhng and use, and be made aware of the potential hazards, personal hygiene, and personal protective measures required. [Pg.88]

Article 186 Ministry of Labor shall establish additional standards about protection and safety measures in the machinery and equipment operations, specially the protection of moving parts, distance between them, access routes to large machineries and equipments, use of tools, adequacy and protection measures required when motorized and electric. [Pg.86]

Lack of accessibility. In complex systems, machinery, and components, there might be inaccessible areas due to lack of design insight where it may not be possible to carry out the corrosion protection measures. Health risk assessment is the process of examining and evaluating the risk to the health and safety of workers while at work arising from the circumstances of the occurrence of a hazard at the workplace [1]. A risk assessment is a careful examination of what, at the workplace, could cause harm to people, so that the employer can decide whether he has taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures. Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect the business too if for example output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or the employer even have to go to court. [Pg.553]

Otherwise, it would seem to be a case-by-case situation that depends on factors such as (but not limited to) the type of equipment, its application, and any additional operator safety concerns. If having the machinery near another machine poses a hazard, OSHA would expect measures be put in place to protect workers. The agency could potentially use the General Duty Clause or perhaps the machine guarding regulations in Subpart O, Machinery and Machine Guarding, to cite an employer. [Pg.267]

Regulation 11 deals v/ith specific hazards associated with the use of work equipment. Mostly, this and the remainder of the Regulations are aimed at the provision of safe equipment, fitted where necessary with safety devices or protected against failure in other cases the requirements affect the use of the equipment. The Regulation sets out requirements to reduce the risk to employees from dangerous parts of machinery. They include measures to prevent access to those dangerous parts and to stop the part s movement before someone (or part of them) enters the danger zone. [Pg.248]

An additional note on lead cames in a modem context is important. Lead is now extmded into cames by precisely measured machinery that can cut down greatly on the amount of lead used, and hence on the weight of the cames. Furthermore, addition of certain metals or metalloids, such as antimony, to the lead stmcture serves to strengthen the lead and give it a life exposed to the weather for perhaps many centuries. Stained glass windows can be further protected by the preventive conservation technique of protective isothermal glazing. [Pg.52]

These measures are the least effective and should only be used if no other solutions are possible. One way of minimizing exposure is to reduce the number of times the hazard is encountered. An example would be modifying machinery so that less maintenance is necessary. The use of appropriate personal protective equipment may be required. To reduce the severity of an accident, emergency facilities, such as eyewash stations, may need to be provided. [Pg.290]
