Human embryo lung fibroblasts infected with a reference laboratory strain of herpes simplex virus (HS V) type 2 were used to detect antibody to HSV type 2 in serum samples. After treatment of cells with serial dilutions of sera, HRP-labeled immunoglobulins to human IgG (class G immunoglobulins) were added and detected with CL substrate [36], In both cases a sharp detection of the specific antibodies was achieved with chemiluminescent assays, which proved more sensitive than the colorimetric immunoperoxidase assays.

Several diaryl teUurides exhibit protection against TBH-induced cell death in lung fibroblast cultures. Besides, the same compounds prevent leucocyte-mediated cell damage in Caco-2 cells and protect rat kidney tissue against oxidative damage caused by anoxia and reoxygenation. 

Cytotoxicity assays employ mammalian celk in culture to measure cellular metabolic impairment and death resulting from exposure in vitro to soluble and particulate toxicants. Mammalian cells derived from various tissues and organs can be maintained as short term primary cultures or, in some cases, as continuous cell strains or lines. The cytotoxicity assays, incorporated as part of Level 1 analysis, employ primary cultures of rabbit alveolar (lung) macrophages (RAM) and maintenance cultures of strain WI-38 human lung fibroblasts.

Serotonin (5-HT) produces a rapid elevation of superoxide that stimulates the mitogenesis of bovine pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (SMCs). EGb scavenges superoxide elevated by 5-HT, hence preventing 5-HT-induced mitogenesis on both SMCs and Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts. These results indicate that EGb inhibits the cellular transduction signaling process that leads to mitogenesis, as a result of its antioxidant activity [141].
