Lobster Spiny, Panulirus

The deoxy forms of hemocyanins are colorless, as a result of their 3d ° dicopper(I) centers. Although chemical and x-ray absorption spectroscopic studies had shed considerable light on the nature of the deoxy-He dicopper binding site, there now exist two x-ray crystal structures, the first on the the spiny lobster He, Panulirus interruptus [23], and a recent one of the horseshoe crab Limulus II protein [24], The structures exhibit rather different active-site characteristics, and since the former was crystallized at low pH and possesses rather odd copper coordination, the latter Limulus II structure is probably representative. It indicates that the two Cu(I) ions are 4.6 A apart, each found in a trigonal-planar coordination environment with Cu-NMs bond distances of about 2.0 A (Figure 1). Crustaceans are known to use pheromones in behavioral contexts other than avoidance, including reproduction and social interactions. For example, at least one spiny lobster, the California spiny lobster Panulirus interrupts, has been shown to be attracted to the odor of conspecifics.131 This pheromonal phenomenon is taken advantage of by workers in the lobster fishery, who use live lobsters as bait in their pots.132 However, relatively little research has been performed on the topic of aggregation pheromones, including the nature of the signal and its sensory reception. There are two species of spiny lobsters in North America. The West Coast spiny lobster Panulirus inter-ruptus) occurs on the Pacific coast, and the Caribbean spiny lobster (P. argus) occurs in the Caribbean Sea, off the Horida Coast, and in the Gulf of Mexico. These warm-water species do not have the huge, crushing, and tearing claws of the Homarus typical lobsters, but they have a needle-sharp, spiny carapace, and very long antennae. [Pg.147]

The fates of the herbicides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) 2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) and the DDT metabolite, bis-(4-chlorophenyl) acetic acid (DDA) were studied in the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus 24). All acids were injected intrapericardially at 10 mg/kg. Both 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T were extensively excreted, unchanged, in urine in the first 24 hours after the dose. About 10% of the dose of 2,4,D and 2,4,5T was taken up by hepatopancreas where the taurine conjugate was formed and subsequently excreted either in urine or feces. Part of the DDA dose was excreted in urine, as unchanged DDA and as DDA-taurine, but DDA was more extensively taken up by shell and hepatopancreas and more slowly excreted than 2,4D or 2,4,5-T. For all three carboxylic acids, muscle concentrations were lower than hemolymph concentrations at 24 hours after the dose, and were less than 5p.g/g. [Pg.127]

Hemocyanins (Hcl are oxygen-transport nonheme proteins I MW 10 lO ) which are found in the blood of some insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. One of the smallest He (MW 450,000) e.xiracted from spiny lobster Panulirus inierrupius consists of six subunits each containing two Cu atoms.
