Chemical pollution From a qualitative point of view, an important common issue is the excess of chemicals (fertilisers and pesticides) associated with agrarian and livestock farming diffuse sources and the point-source discharge of (treated and untreated) sewage water. Industrial point-source pollution is not addressed as a relevant issue, but it is assumed that industries operate following the legal rules and only the incomplete elimination of industrial chemicals in urban wastewater treatment plants is perceived as a problem. 

Several common methods for the detection of these compounds in environmental media have been proposed such as microbiological assay and conventional chromatographic methods. However, only one example of the application of immunochemical methods to the analysis of environmental samples has been reported [84]. In this case, erythromycin could be measured at concentrations higher than 10 pg L 1 using the Charm II6600/7600 assay in water samples proximal to livestock farms.

In the early 70 s the increase of stock caused increasing problems with odour immissions from livestock farming. For a practicable research work in this field, a portable olfactometer was required to get objective results direct from the different odour emitting sources. Since that time portable and transportable types of olfactometers have been developed. Some of our experience concerning the application of portable and transportable olfactometers is presented in this paper.
