Liver Morphology. Two 1-g pieces of liver from each piglet were fixed in 10% formalin and sent to the Surgical Pathology Service of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University for examination. Tissue samples were embedded in wax, sectioned, stained, and evaluated by light microscopy. Two pathologists who were unaware of treatment independently examined tissue sections. 

Studies in which animals are chronically exposed to cadmium confirm the renal effects observ in humans (Friberg etal, 1986). Animal studies also confirm problems with calcium metabolism and related skeletal effects which have been observed among humans exposed to cadmium in addition to the renal effects. Other effects commonly reported in chronic animal studies include anemia, changes in liver morphology, immunosuppression and hypertension. Some of these effects may be associated with co-factors. Hypertension, for example, appears to be associated with diet as well as cadmium exposure. Animals injected with cadmium have also shown testicular necrosis (Ex. 8-86B). 

Syndromes with cystic kidneys have always to be excluded (Table 3.3). Due to the common combination of liver changes in patients with cystic kidneys the liver morphology is important for clinical classification.
