Lithium elderly people

The adverse effects and interactions of lithium have been reviewed (5,103-105,106). One review focused on lithium toxicity in elderly people (107). The adverse effects of lithium range widely in intensity and can be a major cause of nonadherence to therapy. However, with proper attention to the prevention and management of adverse effects, most patients can be treated effectively and safely. Withdrawal of lithium is almost always followed by resolution of adverse effects, although certain problems can sometimes persist (for example renal).

Tremor and myoclonus Fasciculations can occur in lithium toxicity, and hthium toxicity can occur in the target serum concentration range, particularly in elderly people. 

Endocrine Thyroid Thyroid abnormalities are common during lithium treatment 20% develop hypothyroidism and 40% develop goiter if untreated [33 ]. In one study of elderly people (over 65 years old) taking lithium (n=79), 28 were hypothyroid [34 ]. This compares with a rate of only 7.1% of a matched non-lithium-treated control group (n = 85), a rate that is similar to that of the general population. This effect is not mediated by production of antithyroid antibodies, since antibodies were present in 27% of the patients who were tested, a rate that is similar to that in non-lithium-treated patients in this age group. The lack of association with antithyroid antibodies in lithium-related thyroid dysfunction is true for all age groups [35 j. 

In 2010, production of electric bikes in China reached 13.43 million units in 2012 and 2013, it rose to 20.28 million and 25.29 million, respectively. The sales value over the next 5 years is expected to increase at a ratio of at least 6% (Figure 16.6). With the increasing numbers of senior and elderly people in China, more electric bikes will use lithium-ion batteries, which are light and have high energy density.
