Liquid multiple-stage

Sometimes, alternative single- or multiple-stage vapor-liquid separation operations, of the types shown in Fig. 13-7, may be more suitable than distillatiou for the specified task. [Pg.1244]

A brief discussion of sohd-liquid phase equihbrium is presented prior to discussing specific crystalhzation methods. Figures 20-1 and 20-2 illustrate the phase diagrams for binary sohd-solution and eutectic systems, respectively. In the case of binary solid-solution systems, illustrated in Fig. 20-1, the liquid and solid phases contain equilibrium quantities of both components in a manner similar to vapor-hquid phase behavior. This type of behavior causes separation difficulties since multiple stages are required. In principle, however, high purity... [Pg.3]

Batch-stirred vessels are most often used in treating material with powdered activated carbon (72). The type of carbon, contact time, and amount of carbon vary with the desired degree of purification. The efficiency of activated carbon may be improved by applying continuous, countercurrent carbon—liquid flow with multiple stages (Fig. 3). Carbon is separated from the liquid at each stage by settling or filtration. Filter aids such as diatomaceous earth are sometimes used to improve filtration. [Pg.533]

Once cooled, the effluent from the process separates into a liquid-water phase and a gaseous phase, the latter containing mainly carbon dioxide along with oxygen which was in excess of the stoichiometric requirements, and nitrogen. The separation is carried out in multiple stages in order to minimize erosion of valves, as well as to maximise the separation due to phase-equilibrium constraints. [Pg.513]

Electrospray mass spectrometry has developed into a well-established method of wide scope and potential over the past 15 years. The softness of electrospray ionization has made this technique an indispensable tool for biochemical and biomedical research. Electrospray ionization has revolutionized the analysis of labile biopolymers, with applications ranging from the analysis of DNA, RNA, oligonucleotides, proteins as well as glycoproteins to carbohydrates, lipids, gly-colipids, and lipopolysaccharides, often in combination with state-of-the-art separation techniques like liquid chromatography or capillary electrophoresis [1,2]. Beyond mere analytical applications, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESMS) has proven to be a powerful tool for collision-induced dissociation (CID) and multiple-stage mass spectrometric (MSn) analysis, and - beyond the elucidation of primary structures - even for the study of noncovalent macromolecular complexes [3]. [Pg.155]

Industrial applications usually are based on the most efficient methods that involve the countercurrent flow of two liquids across multiple stages. A variety of mechanical devices are available that can be used to achieve such mixing and separate the resulting extract and raffinate and so achieve the desire separation. Once the extraction is complete, almost always both the extract and raffinate need to be treated to recover solvent residuals as well as the desired products. [Pg.710]
