Lipids from algae lipid analysis

This experiment provides students with the opportunity to isolate a biomolecule from its natural source, followed by its purification and identification. In addition, students will follow a procedure that is typical of the general extraction and characterization of lipids. However, unlike most lipids, the plant pigments are highly colored and may be characterized and quantified by visible spectrophotometry. Several types of plant tissue may be used. Some recommendations are fresh leaves (tree, plant, grass, spinach), green algae, or mosses. For variety, students may be asked to bring their own samples for analysis. [Pg.338]

Total lipids were solvent extracted from freeze dried algae (21,22) for the initial lipid profile, and for the analysis of remaining lipids after SC extraction. [Pg.450]

The following are examples of TLC analyses in which SFE was the method used for sample preparation lipids in wool (analysis by TLC-FID) hpids in fish feed (TLC-FID) the pesticide chlorpyrifos and its degradation products in soil hydrocarbons in heavy petroleum products (TLC-FID) aromatic and ahphatic hydroperoxides in solid matrices (online sample transfer to TLC plates) colored fractions from a Mediterranean brown alga essential oil in foods " and cyanazine from soil (silica gel TLC-densitometry at 220 nm). " ... [Pg.2113]

Chondrus crispus and Polysiphonia lanosa (still attached to its brown alga host, Ascophyllum nodosum), collected from along the South Wales coast, were stored and Incubated as described. Lipids were extracted by the boiling Isopropanol procedure . Initial fractionation was on acid-washed Florosil columns and further analysis was as before. ... [Pg.657]
