Rotary Locations of measurement points for rotary positive-displacement pumps should be based on the same logic as in-line centrifugal pumps. The primary (X-axis) radial measurement should be taken in the plane opposite the discharge port. Most rotating equipment includes electric motors or steam dryers that generate noise at a constant frequency. Air cooler fans are a source of noise that can be reduced by lowering the fan speed and increasing the number of blades. Pump motor noise can be reduced by including a shroud or fan cover that is accurately lined. Centrifugal compressor noise reduction can be achieved by blade design and the use of compressor pulsation noise reduction, silencers, and vibration isolation.

The pumps can be either centrifugal or positive displacement types. The centrifugal pumps should have a head curve continuously rising toward the shut-off point. The standby pump should be piped into the system in a manner that permits checking of the pump while the main pump is in operation. To achieve this, a restriction orifice is required with a test bleeder valve piped to the return oil line or the reservoir. 

When a pump has a motor drive, the process engineer must verify that the motor will not overload from extreme process changes. The horsepower for a centrifugal pump increases with flow. If the control valve in the discharge line fully opens or an operator opens the control valve bypass, the pump will tend to run out on its curve, giving more flow and requiring more...

Milk-of-lime transfer pumps should be of the open impeller centrifugal type. Pumps having an iron body and impeller with bronze trim are suitable for this purpose. Rubber-lined pumps with rubber-covered impellers are also frequently used. Makeup tanks are usually provided ahead of centrifugal pumps to ensure a flooded suction at all times. Plating out of lime is minimized by the use of soft water in the makeup tank and slurry recirculation. Turbine pumps and eductors should be avoided in transferring milk of lime because of scaling problems. 

Positive pumps are normally fitted with relief valves. These are not usually fitted to centrifugal pumps unless the process material is likely to explode if it gets too hot. As an alternative to a relief valve, such pumps may be fitted with a high-temperature trip. This isolates the power supply. Or a kick-back, a small-diameter line (or a line with a restrietion orifice plate) leading from the delivery line baek to the suction vessel, may be used. The line or orifice plate is sized so that it will pass just enough liquid to prevent the pump from overheating. Small-diameter tines are better than restriction orifice plates as they are less easily removed. 

The pressure at any point in the suction line must never be reduced to the vapor pressure of the liquid (see Equation 3-6). Both the suction head and the vapor pressure must be expressed in feet of the liquid, and must both be expressed as gauge pressure or absolute pressure. Centrifugal pumps cannot pump any quantity of vapor, except possibly some vapor entrained or absorbed in the liquid, but do not count cm it. The liquid or its gases must not vaporize in the eye/entrance of the impeller. (This is the lowest pressure location in the impeller.)... 

The head against which the liquid is to be pumped. This will be determined by the difference in pressure, the vertical height of the downstream and upstream reservoirs and by the frictional losses which occur in the delivery line. The suitability of a centrifugal pump and the number of stages required will largely be determined by this factor.
