Cross-stream samphng from flat surfaces with material handled on a hnear conveyor or rotary table is best carried out with the conveyor stopped. Sample extraction is then performed by linear traverse. 

Conveyor-belt speeds above approximately 300 ft per minute (1.5 meters per second) impart sufficient momentum to material discharging at its head pulley to cause lifting of material streams in a trajectory from the head pulley. A trajectory is illustrated in Fig. 19-7. Blades of the sample cutter are positioned to intersect the trajectoiy. See Fig. 19-7 for an example of a linear-traversing bottom-dump cutter installation. Calculation of trajectory profiles are described in the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association publications and similar references. 

An electric-drive linear-traversing sampler of minimum standard manufactured size with cutter ana controls will range upwards of 8,000. 

Bruggemann (1988), using the linear traverse technique for phase abundance, demonstrated that small, lattice defective, alite crystals produced in kilns with steep temperature profiles and short residence times improve grindability and cement quality. Ono s method, utilizing only a few crystals in a powder mount, was said to give doubtful results. ... 

Determination of the percentages of clinker phases can be accomplished by (a) visual comparison with known (measured) clinker standards (Long, 1982a), (b) visual comparison with percentage diagrams (Figure 11-1), (c) point counts, or (d) linear traverse. It does not seem possible to provide a figure of merit for a fluid that possesses these sundry needs, but (see Sect. 6.6) the linear traverse mechanism will demonstrably test total capability in that respect [115]. In this device, two contra-rotating, high-inertia, constant-velocity rotors provide motion somces with HT (high tension) and earth busbars , the excitation being controlled via switches.
