The radial velocities were estimated by identifying a few lines (3 to 6, depending on the quality of the spectra) and fitting a Gaussian profile to each line to find the line core. We estimated the average radial velocity, and we present here only the stars with standard deviation of the mean less than 7 km s 1. [Pg.273]

Multiple line core spectra are produced also if the atom has an open valence shell, provided that the crystalline environment has not wiped out the J, L, S, M quantization of that shell the core vacancy is variously coupled to the open shell to yield a set of final states. For example, if the open shell has the one-electron orbital quantum numbers n and l and total spin S, a core s vacancy will be observed in two final states having spins (S +1/2) and (S — 1/2), with the latter spin state lying higher in energy. According to Condon-Slater-Racah theory, the energy separation is... [Pg.119]

The technique allows a casting design with no parting lines, cores and draft angles and reduced feed metal. This reduces the need for finishing and machining operations. [Pg.202]

Although certain of the above-mentioned theories are moderately successful in representing the experimental data of CF4 -t- CH and other fluorocarbon + hydrocarbon mixtures, experimental values of and x are required. At present there is no satisfactory method of obtaining these parameters a priori. Scott, in his 1958 review, considered the various possible factors that could lead to a weakening of the unlike interactions in such mixtures. He concluded that the three most significant were the presence of non-central forces, differences in ionization potential, and differences in size of the two component molecules. The use of the Kihara potential together with the Hudson and McCoubrey rule takes account of all these effects and thus the undoubted success of the Knobler treatment is not surprising. Criticisms could be levelled at his use of a spherically symmetric potential for substances such as n-hexane but the use of a more realistic potential such as the Kihara line-core potential is hardly justified until reliable experimental values for the ionization potentials of the fluorocarbons become available. [Pg.154]

Four types of drilling systems employed for obtaining subsurface strata samples in coal exploration and development activities are the (1) rotary and (2) reverse circulation (noncore) systans and (3) conventional and (4) wire-line-coring systems. Each system is identifiable by its unique method of sample recovery (Landua, 1977 Chugh, 1985 Whittaker, 1985). [Pg.132]

German KONVOI plants are equipped with a permanent in-core instrumentation. N4 plants have very accurate movable in-core instrumentation with long time response used to calibrate the less accurate ex-core instrumentation used in the core protection system. With the fixed in-core measurements, periodically calibrated by the very quick movable aeroball system, the on-line core surveillance and protection is far more precise and contributes to a significant increase of the safety margins. [Pg.174]

Neutronic and thermohydraulic data will be obtained from fixed in-core instrumentation, fixed incore doctors and thermocouples, providing on-line core performance monitoring. [Pg.66]

Several balloon spectra cover parts of the fundamental vibration-rotation band of CO MULLER, SAUVAL (1975), GOLDMAN et al. (1973). Comparison with predicted line profiles from current models basically confirms the LIE formation of CO lines. Some departures at the limb from the predicted brightening of the line core (NOYES, HALL 1972) can be better explained in term of increasing contribution of inhomogeneities seen edgewise, as mentioned above for the submillimetric brightening. [Pg.104]

Figure 2.3 shows Gauss and Lorentz profiles of equal area and FWHM as well as the resulting Voigt distribution. While the Lorentz portion dominates at the line wings, the Gauss portion determines the shape in the line core. [Pg.9]

In HR-CS AAS, the best linearity of the calibration function is obtained when the absorbance measured at the center pixel (CP), i.e. at the line core only, is used for evaluation. However, the sensitivity might be increased by typically a factor of two by integrating the... [Pg.62]

The second, the WSA approach proposed by Hamly et al. [50,51] for use with CCD detectors, in contrast, appears to be much more practical. In this case narrower entrance slits may be used and, in addition to the evaluation of the CP only, i.e. the line core (or the CP 1 or 2 etc.), other pairs of pixels, such as +3 and —3 or +4 and -4 are used for evaluation. These latter pixels measure the absorbance at the wings only, at a given distance from the line center, where the absorbance is still increasing linearly with the concentration. In this case the measurement is not influenced by line broadening, as the absorbance around the line center is not considered. This means that a set of linear calibration curves with a slope of 1.0 on a log-log scale is obtained. [Pg.64]

As mentioned above, using HR-CS AAS, signal registration cannot only be done at the CP M, corresponding to the line core, as in conventional LS AAS, but also using the volume Ma, of the absorption peak with an increasing number of pixels, or the side pixels Na, only, as shown in Figure 4.3. [Pg.64]
