Insofar as they have been studied, all herbicides that inhibit the Hill reaction of isolated chloroplasts also inhibit photosynthesis of intact plants and photosynthetic microorganisms (2, 3). Phy to toxicity is produced only in the light, and severity of symptoms is proportional to light intensity. Studies with light quality have indicated that the chlorophylls are the principal absorbing pigments involved in the production of phytotoxicity.

Phycobiiisome rods of Anabaena variabilis contain mostly phycocyanin (PC), a minor amount of phy-coerythrin (PE), and four linker polypeptides with molecular weights of 27, 29, 30.5 and 32.5 kDa. The phycocyanin and phycoerythrin content depends on culture conditions, such as light quality, temperature, etc. The order ofphycobiliprotein complexes along the rod is indicated for Anabaena variabilis in Fig. 9 the experimental confirmation of this sequence will be described below. 

There is further evidence to support the claim that brassinosteroids are hormonal in their action (6). These are the effects of brassinolide on gravitropism (7), effects in conjunction with light quality (8), effects on photosynthate partitioning (9), probable effects on phytochrome (10), substitution for indole-3-acetic acid in soybean epicotyls (11), enhancement of xylem differentiation (11), stimulation of membrane permeability in cucumber hypocotyls (12), and stimulation of ATPase activity (12). Taken objectively, many of these specific physiological and biochemical functions which are attributed to brassinolide, and by inference to the brassinosteroids in general, have been attributed to the other plant hormones, especially indole-3-acetic acid and the gibberellins (6, 13). 

The ICS Micro Match spectrophotometer used to measure these samples is equipped with the option of using alternative illuminants to calculate CIELAB. The estimated changes in meat colour attributable to different illuminants after one and four days exposure (Table 3.2) illustrate the effect that light quality has on lightness, hue and chroma. The changes in colour produced by the differences... 

The photoinduction and photoregulation of carotenogenesis in some fungal species have been studied in relation to light quality and illumination period. 

Light quality was also shown to influence extracellular and total cellular activity (intracellular plus surface activity) in four marine phytoplankton species (Wynne and Rhee, 1988), with activity being higher under blue light than other parts of the spectrum, including white light of the same intensity. In the case of the diatom Phaeo-dactylum tricomutum, extracellular activity... 

Color Rendition (Rendering) Index (CRI) - A measure of light quality. The maximum CRI value of 100 is given to natural daylight and incandescent lighting. The closer a lamp s CRI rating is to 100, the better its ability to show true colors to the human eye. 

Light Quality - A description of how well people in a lighted space can see to do visual tasks and how visually comfortable they feel in that space.
