Library partial

When a mass spectrum has been acquired by the spectrometer/computer system, it is already in digital form as m/z values versus peak heights (ion abundances), and it is a simple matter for the computer to compare each spectrum in the library with that of the unknown until it finds a match. The shortened search is carried out first, and the computer reports the best fits or matches between the unknown and spectra in the library. A search of even 60,000 to 70,000 spectra takes only a few seconds, particularly if transputers are used, thus saving the operator a great deal of time. Even a partial match can be valuable because, although the required structure may not have been found in the library, it is more than likely that some of the library compounds will have stractural pieces that can be recognized from a partial fit and so provide information on at least part of the structure of the unknown. 

To make the actual analysis simple and fast, a large amount of precomputed information is utilized. By using library spectra of pure molecular gases together with a special mathematical multicomponent analysis, it is possible to calculate the partial pressures of the gases in a gas mixture. 

The SAIC New York office houses five encoded data sets of the type described above and partial and raw data sets from five other plants. SAIC also maintains a published data source library from various industries. This library has been used to compile generic data sets for PRA screening, supplementing weak areas in plant-specific data sets, and as a basis for comparing plant data with world experience.

Figure 2.8 is a partial snapshot of the recent progress in the construction of this general library, taken from Ref. [23]. Only the homoleptic complexes which can be fitted by the REC model are included. In the case of the halides F-, Cl-, Br-, energy levels were used [21]. For oxygen, two series of a total of 10 POM complexes were used, but in this case only xT data were available. For nitrogen, a combination of simultaneous fits, xT data and spectroscopic data, was used [22, 24]. In this comparison we chose to depict the position...
