Less Is More

Peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence is the most efficient nonenzymatic chemiluminescent reaction known. Quantum efficiencies as high as 22—27% have been reported for oxalate esters prepared from 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 3-trif1uoromethy1-4-nitropheno1 (6,76,77) with the duorescers mbrene [517-51-1] (78,79) or 5,12-bis(phenylethynyl)naphthacene [18826-29-4] (79). For most reactions, however, a quantum efficiency of 4% or less is more common with many in the range of lO " to 10 ein/mol (80). The inefficiency in the chemiexcitation process undoubtedly arises from the transfer of energy of the activated peroxyoxalate to the duorescer. The inefficiency in the CIEEL sequence derives from multiple side reactions available to the reactive intermediates in competition with the excited state producing back-electron transfer process.

The principle behind these units of payment leads to a "less is more" situation - this means higher earnings for the supplier within Chemical Leasing while less chemicals are provided. Peters calls this the control paradox less is more. Less central control and more genuinely delegated self-control for those closest to the action translates into tighter overall control.

When it comes to fixation, less is more. Best results are obtained if one tries to just-adequately fix the sample to minimize problems in antibody binding (see Chapter 8). Typically, 2 4-% formaldehyde is sufficient. In cases of aldehyde incompatibility with the antibody, ice cold methanol is an alternative. When using aldehydes, one must make sure that the fixative is freshly prepared...

So my proposal is that for the purpose of recording the epistemology of a safety case, models should be expressed as systems of constraints rather than as simulation models less is more. Until fairly recently, it would have been difficult to validate systems of constraints unlike simulation models, it was not feasible to run experimental calculations to check the predictions of the model against intuition and reality. Fortunately, we now have technology such as infinite bounded model checkers, based on highly effective constraint solvers for satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) that allow exploration of constraint-based models (see [18,19] for some simple examples).
