Legislation compliance

Electroplating. Many developments in electroplating (qv) have been driven by increased coating functionaHty and economy, others by environmental and legislative compliance. This field has expanded rapidly. Only some of the developments are discussed herein.

In addition to primary and ready1 tests, within legislative compliance there are two other types of ultimate biodegradability tests. Inherent and simulation tests provide valuable information on the level of biodegradability expected if the test material does not meet the ready1 criteria. This provides essential information when carrying out risk assessments particularly on surfactants which can have high levels of ecotoxicity.

An effective programme of loss control (risk reduction) not only leads to a more profitable situation, but will also greatly assist legislative compliance, and will result in a reduction in the total number of accidents within the organisation s operations. 

Table 2 Hsts some of the physical, toxicity, flammabiUty, and reactivity properties of common chemicals (10,13,42,45—51). Also given are some of the quantities specified for reporting spills and for compliance with legislated requirements. The OSHA regulations require that material safety data sheets (MSDS) be developed for all process materials, so that the ha2ard data can be communicated to employees (52). Characteristics of toxicity, flammabiUty, chemical iastabiUty, reactivity and reaction energy, operatiag coaditioas, and corrosive properties of constmction materials must all be considered ia analy2iag ha2ard poteatials of chemicals and chemical operations.

Laboratories wishing to claim GLP compliance are nonually registered with Competent Authorities who issue statements of compliance following successful periodic inspections of the premises to monitor compliance with the relevant legislation. In the UK compliance with the Good Laboratory Practice Regulations 1999 is audited by the Medicines Control Agency. 

Specific attention is given to auditing for compliance with legislation, including the requirements of IPC, BATNEEC and BPEO. 

Information management system designed to aid in the creation of MSDSs. Includes packages containing hazardous materials data for compliance with "Right to Know" legislation. 

That the authorities have refused unreasonably to accept compliance with alternative requirements or that the requirements of the notice are otherwise unreasonable in character or extent, or are unnecessary. This defense is self-explanatory. The local authorities are only permitted to ask for works that will abate the noise nuisance. Other works (perhaps to comply with legislation) should not be specified in the notice. They may, however, be contained in a letter separate from the notice. An example of this would be where the fitting of acoustic enclosures to food-manufacturing machines breached food hygiene requirements. Readily cleanable enclosures may be a requirement of the Food Hygiene Regulations, but it should not be contained in a Section 58 Control of Pollution Act notice.
