Learning, automatic

Neural networks can learn automatically from a data set of examples. In the case of NMR chemical shiffs, neural networks have been trained to predict the chemical shift of protons on submission of a chemical structure. Two main issues play decisive roles how a proton is represented, and which examples are in the data set. [Pg.523]

Our experiences with the software developed within the ANDES project have shown that CBR is a helpful methodology for use in the interpretation of NDT data from field inspections. Because CBR systems can adapt to new situations they can cope with inspection of varying constructions in varying conditions. However, because CBR systems learn from classifications made by the operator this means that they will not be very useful for completely automatic interpretation. Fortunately, most of the NDT inspection requires the presence of an operator because of the required high reliability. [Pg.103]

In recent decades, computer scientists have tried to provide computers with the ability to learn. This area of research was summarized under the umbrella term "machine learning . Today machine learning is defined as "the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience [1]. [Pg.440]

Thi.s could provide a much richer source of information on chemical reactions and thus build a better basis for automatic learning methods. [Pg.545]

Another aspect of the response to plant transients is the effective use of the emergency procedures. The process worker needs training in order to be able to apply these procedures correctly under time pressure. Conditions of entry or transfer to other procedures, profitability-safety requirements, and the response of the automatic protection systems need to be learned extensively in training exercises. [Pg.130]

Unsupervised learning—In this type the network is able to discover statistical regularities in its input space and automatically develops different modes of behavior to represent different types of inputs. [Pg.5]

The next section will focus on the representation necessary to express this sufficient theory to the computer, so that it can automatically carry out the reasoning associated with analyzing the examples selected by the syntactic criteria presented in this section. Section V will describe the learning methodology, which, using the representation of Section IV, will generate the new dominance and equivalence conditions. [Pg.302]

Part of the purpose of the case studies was to gain experience that would guide future dam break analyses in Hawaii. Some of the lessons learned during the case studies are therefore listed below. These conclusions are based on the two sites examined but cannot automatically be assumed to hold for all other sites. [Pg.201]

Mettler produce two automatic titrimeters the DL 40 GP memotitrator and the lower-cost DL 20 compact titrator. Features available on the DL 40GP include absolute and relative end-point titrations, equivalence point titrations, back-titration techniques, multi-method applications, dual titration, pH stating, automatic learn titrations, automatic determination of standard deviation and means, series titrations, correction to printer, acid balance analogue output for recorder and correction to the laboratory... [Pg.40]

In contrast to our preferred standard mode in this book, we do not develop a Matlab function for the task of numerical integration of the differential equations pertinent to chemical kinetics. While it would be fairly easy to develop basic functions that work reliably and efficiently with most mechanisms, it was decided not to include such functions since Matlab, in its basic edition, supplies a good suite of fully fledged ODE solvers. ODE solvers play a very important role in many applications outside chemistry and thus high level routines are readily available. An important aspect for fast computation is the automatic adjustment of the step-size, depending on the required accuracy. Also, it is important to differentiate between stiff and non-stiff problems. Proper discussion of the difference between the two is clearly outside the scope of this book, however, we indicate the stiffness of problems in a series of examples discussed later. So, instead of developing our own ODE solver in Matlab, we will learn how to use the routines supplied by Matlab. This will be done in a quite extensive series of examples. [Pg.82]

We will consider all the components of this temperature control loop in more detail later in this book. For now we need only appreciate the fact that the automatic control of some variable in a process requires the installation of a sensor, a transmitter, a controller, and a final control element (usually a control valve). Most of this book is aimed at learning how to decide what type of controller should be used and how it should be tuned, i.e., how should the adjustable tuning parameters in the controller be set so that we do a good job of controlling temperature. [Pg.5]
