Learning and Continuous Improvement

Continuously improve operations and accountability to achieve higher levels of safety culture, technology, management, and overall company performance. Individuals at all levels should collectively, actively and systematically identily, evaluate, develop, and promote adoption of best practices and lessons learned to continually improve performance and increase their capacity to achieve desired results. A successful continuous improvement element requires the following

Competency case application. Lessons learned from the competency program were described in Step 2 of the Check phase. The work team should focus on lessons learned and continual improvements should be made, because the strategy for CQl used for this project will be adapted to other improvement projects in the future.

We used to think that discipline-based competence, knowledge, skills, and attitudes were sufficient to create safety. We learned instead that capability—or the extent to which individuals can, collectively and across disciplines, adapt to change, generate new knowledge, and continually improve performance—is critical. 

The model is organized as a cycle and is meant to mimic the idea of continuous improvement cycle, leading to self-learning and self-improving agile organization. 

Evaluation Although there are many excellent meetings, there is no perfect one. Continuous improvement is the goal. Systematic and continuing improvement requires evaluation of performance (self-evaluation and/or evaluation by others), and appHcation of what s learned from the evaluation. What are the negatives to overcome The positives to build on Items such as those shown in Figure 13.8 can be helpful for this type of evaluation. 

A safety assessment must not be viewed as a one-off exercise people should be continuously trying to make things safer. Errors and mistakes are inevitable and safety can only be improved if the orgaiusation can learn from its mistakes.
