Leaking pipe

Even where effective external mechanical deaeration and/or internal oxygen scavenging is provided, oxygen still may present a serious risk as a consequence of air ingress into leaking pipes, steam traps, and air vents. 

Also radioisotopes are used in industry, to detect leaking pipes. A small amount is injected into the pipe. It is then detected with a Geiger counter above ground. 

An actuator fault can be generated by a malfunction of the cooling system, such as electric-power failures, pomp failures, valves failures, and leaking pipes. Without loss of generality, actuator faults may be modeled as an unknown additive term affecting the state equation in (6.5), due to unexpected variations of the input u with respect to its nominal value, i.e., the value computed by the reactor control system. 

Translucent roofing over an indoor swimming pool must remain translucent and failure to do so cannot be compensated by structural virtues such as excellent retention of flexural strength and modulus. In contrast, the appearance of a chemical storage tank is of minor importance provided that it does not leak. Pipes and tanks need to maintain both their load carrying and chemical resistance qualities. 

Piping layout design should enable gravity flow of the acid to the reactors, to process vessels, etc., so that the pipes can be drained easily. This will be found useful while replacing any leaking pipe or gasket. 

Leaks from pipelines, process vessels, and small storage tanks are a common phenomenon in many chemical plants. It is not always possible to change the leaking pipe or the vessel immediately especially during night shifts due to practical difficulties such as insufficient manpower and less visibility. In such cases, it is imperative to stop the leak at least temporarily till proper repairs or replacement can be done. It may also become necessary to find some immediate practical solutions to operational or maintenance problems though they may not be workable on a long-term basis. These immediate solutions are to be treated like a first aid only. 

It is to be clearly understood that the clamps put on a leaking pipe are as a temporary measure only and the leaked pipe must be replaced immediately or at the earliest. There can be a possibility of a repeat leak from the same spot and hence the area in the proximity of such clamped pipes shall be cordoned off and warning signboards must be displayed. The clamps shall be kept covered so that no spray of the liquid can come out if it leaks again. 

Pipes leak, pipes crack, pipes are corroded, but pipes don t break , one of the senior US industry engineers used to repeat. And indeed, in the light of subsequent experience (now equivalent to more than 10000 reactor-years of operation) very few guillotine breaks of large pipes have happened. Moreover, most of these cases have not... 

Banks of pipes over which cooling water is sprayed. There is a basin below the bank of pipes and has a pump for circulating water. The unit acts like a cooling tower— but without a fan—and any leaking pipe can be easily seen and attended. But it should have enclosure sheets all around to prevent any accident due to such leaks. The basin is supplied with fresh make-up water, and is purged out if TDS increases beyond 4000 ppm to reduce scale formation on the pipes. Cost of power required for ID fan is saved.
