Leadership influences

One form of leadership influence is called transformational leadership (or sometimes just leadership"). The transformational leader actively develops his people. When leadership has this quality, the treatment team member tries to achieve a goal not in anticipation of a reward or to avoid a punishment but because achieving the goal fulfills an organizational purpose important to both the leader and the team member. Transformational leadership exerts its effect principally through relationships and therefore represents an opportunity to build high levels of leader-member exchange. 

These scientists and engineers represent a special challenge to leadership in that the values and motivations may at times be at odds with corporate cultures that emphasise seniority, authority based on hierarchical influence, allegiance to corporate direction, a strict proprietary view of the results of science and technology, and expectations of instantaneous organisational response to changes in direction. 

Speaking to young Flory that day, Carothers said in his slow and measured way, You know, the polymer field is an area where it is my belief [that] mathematics could be applied. Flory spent the rest of his life doing just that and dominated the field of polymers for two decades after World War II. So gentle was Carothers leadership, however, that it was only after his death that Flory realized how much of a shield he had been, and how much of an influence.. .. It was an extraordinary opportunity, I realize now in retrospect. ... 

Another important reason to proceed with a demonstration nuclear expansion is to help the U.S. maintain its leadership and influence abroad. As indicated above, the U.S. has been a leader in world nuclear energy development and implementation. In view of the need for a major world expansion of nuclear energy it would be unfortunate ifthe U.S. was unable to provide the needed help to the world. 

Attitudes reflect the leadership of management or personnel traits of the employees and if not constuctive can lead to negative influences which can precipatate accidents.

Project leadership may not, by some definitions, be regarded as true leadership. But it certainly demands many of the qualities typically associated Avith leadership - imagination and vision, tenacity and often audacity, to say nothing of influencing and personal skills. 

J. A. Conger and R. N. Kanungo (1988a), who describe charisma simply as an extraordinary talent for influence or leadership , question whether there is such a person as a pure charismatic leader who could be charismatic in any circumstances. Charlsmatlcs observed by researchers, they conclude, have been observed to go about transforming a situation in a special way for which they are accorded the attribute of charisma . Their summary of charismatic leaders observable behaviour discerned by research is presented in Box 3.5. 

Therefore, awareness that influences willingness, and leadership, but also new forms of communication and cooperation and a possible shift in corporate (safety) culture, are all crucial elements for ISP. Good and successful examples set by companies seen as peers may also strongly stimulate industry. Indeed, the production of the same pesticide produced by Union Carbide in Bhopal using a batch process was accomplished by DuPont using an inherently safer continuous flow process. 

The subject of Quantum Chemistry is today represented at every major University and the activities mentioned above have resulted in strong international and global networks thanks to the leadership of Per-Olov Lowdin. Through outstanding activities during his lifetime he has influenced generations of physicists and chemists and established important links between the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. 

Even though there are many leadership definitions, Komvies, Lucas, and McMahon (1998) noted several basic assumptions about leadership that are incorporated into the preceding definitions. These assumptions are that leadership is a learned behavior, is teachable, occurs at all levels of the organization, does not require a charismatic personality, is a relational process, is culturally influenced, requires followership, involves purposeful change that satisfies collective needs... 

The major factors I wish to address in recognizing the vital importance of people are leadership, the influence of visionaries, outstanding scientists and engineers, the value of consultants, and the recognition of the achievements of people through awards and a scientific/engineering ladder of promotion. 

Leadership, the ability to influence the actions of ofhers, is based on the interaction of fhree elements the leader, the person or persons being led, and the situation in which both coexist. All three elements change, almost on a daily basis. A good leader understands each of fhe changes and develops sfrafegies fo work wifh and fhrough others to accomplish goals. 

Whereas many theories help an individual xmderstand how to lead, there remain styles of leadership that a person can adopt to influence the actions and behaviors of others. Many of the theories discussed earlier describe some form of leadership behavior. The work of Daniel Goleman in El provides a nice framework for describing various leadership styles.
